What’s New in 3ds Max 2025.3 Update
Faster Array and Boolean Modifier
The Array Modifier and Boolean Modifier have been updated for even faster processing time.
Faster Processing
The Array Modifier will now process results up to 250% faster than before (depending on your array complexity). This is 50 to 210% faster than in the 3ds Max 2025.1 release. Perform volume based meshing with the Boolean Modifier with greater ease. The Boolean Modifier is 20 to 50% faster than in 3ds Max 2025.1 Update.
Animation updates
Assorted fixes and improvements to CAT and Biped workflows. This update address numerous functionality and stability improvements for CAT (Character Animation Toolkit) and BIPED with a view to improve animation workflows, address long-standing issues and customer suggestions.
The following are some of the updates addressed in this release:
FBX warning (CAT & Biped)
– An error that caused FBX to show an inaccurate "Unsupported controller" warning for both CAT and Biped controllers on export has been addressed. CAT and Biped controllers have always been supported but now they no longer generate FBX warning messages.
CAT fixes
This update contains many CAT-specific bug fixes, including the following:
– A problem around the disabling of CAT rig evaluation during scene loading, deleting, or cloning has been fixed. This problem caused some update issues as well as Viewport glitches.
– In the CATMotion Editor, issues surrounding using a path node or snapping foot prints to a ground collider in the around have been fixed.
– Issues related to buttons used to open controls in a Track View in the CATMotion Editor have been fixed.
– A problem with leftover foot print nodes when undoing after cloning a CAT rig has been fixed.
Biped fixes
There has also been several longstanding Biped issues addressed in this update, including the following:
– Issues surrounding the translation of Biped extra bones when loading FBX animation has been addressed.
– Issues surrounding Biped’s MaxScript calls for copy and paste have been fixed.
OpenPBR for 3ds Max
OpenPBR shading is now available in 3ds Max.
OpenPBR is an open-source shading model jointly developed by Autodesk and Adobe, it is designed as the successor to Autodesk Standard Surface and Adobe Standard Material, offering enhanced functionality and a more user-friendly experience while also enhancing interoperability of materials between different CG software.
The OpenPBR material can be accessed in the Slate and Compact Material Editors. It is supported in the viewport, will render with MAXtoA 5.7.5 (included with 3ds Max 2025.3), and comes with built-in presets of many physically realistic materials.

USD for 3ds Max 0.9
Updated Universal Scene Description (USD) plug-in lets you view and edit prim properties.
What’s New in USD for 3ds Max 0.9
Edit prim properties
– The Modify panel now displays prim properties, letting you inspect USD prims, view their data, and make edits as needed.
Import USD Curves
– We have added a new import feature that lets you import USD Curves as 3ds Max Shapes.
Create draw mode for Point Instances
– For USD Point Instances, you can now choose to create one of three draw modes: default, card (box) and card (cross).
Snap to prim vertices, faces and edges
– We have added a USD option to the Snap settings, which lets you snap to the faces, vertices, and edges of USD mesh prims.
Arnold for 3ds Max 5.7.5.0 plug-in
This release includes a major feature release bringing a new OpenPBR surface shader, improvements to volume rendering, OIDN support for AMD GPUs, and many more improvements and bug fixes.
Animation
– Fixed a rare crash when trying to display the rollouts of these controllers in the motion panel: Euler XYZ, Look At, Scale XYZ, and Local Euler XYZ (Legacy). MAXX-77995
– Performing an FBX exporting of a Biped or CAT rig and not baking should no longer incorrectly report the Biped and CAT controllers as unsupported.
– Also fixed a minor bug where the Biped controller called "Biped SubAnim" was returning a garbage value. Selecting this in the trackview could cause a performance issue trying to Description a curve out to nowhere. MAXX-78243
– Fixed a crash in Biped when using copy tracks feature with extra bones present. MAXX-75462
– Fixed several issues with Biped’s maxscript interface to copy and paste poses/postures/tracks. These should now behave correctly. Ex: "biped.copyposture". MAXX-76319
– Fixed several crashes that occurred from Biped’s filters and fixers. These are exposed in the Mixer and in Maxscript as "BipFilter" and "BipFixer". MAXX-77763
CAT Motion Editor, Fixed several issues:
. Globals -> Path Node button. This pick button will now not let you choose a node that is already a part of the rig, or anything attached to the rig.
. LimbPhases -> Pick Ground button. (Only enabled when there are foot prints to adjust) Various issues likely didn’t allow this feature to work well. It should now properly adjust the foot print nodes like a one-time snap to ground.
. Fixed a crash when navigating away from the LimbPhases panel.
. Fixed all of the buttons to open TrackViews. They should all now properly display the desired tracks.

– Fixed a bug in CAT related to custom rigs causing crashes when adding layers. MAXX-56772
– Fixed a bug in the Track View that prevented the "(Locked)" text from showing up on locked tracks. MAXX-77129
– Resolved a crash with the Skin modifier during the voxel calculations. MAXX-77750
– Fixed an issue where CAT rigs were trying to update footprint nodes in the middle of loading scenes with CAT rigs, deleting CAT nodes, or cloning CAT rigs. This caused CAT glitches, extra footprint nodes, and crashes. MAXX-76056
– Fixed an issue internal to CAT where when loading scenes, deleting CAT nodes, cloning CAT rigs; CAT was not properly disabling evaluation during these actions causing issues and viewport glitches. MAXX-77700
Core
Added handling of 3DSMAX_DOESEXIST_TEST_FILE_ATTRIBUTE_OFFLINE environment variable. If defined and set to true, the DoesFileExist test does not return false if the file is found but its FILE_ATTRIBUTE_OFFLINE flag is set. This is for better support of distributed file systems. MAXX-78367
Fix maxscript runtime error when running DaylightSystemFactory2.create() MAXX-78330
maxzip now stores ✅File Names with forward slashes rather than backwards slashes per zip specification. MAXX-78200
Fixed issue that if unhide multiple layers in Layer Explorer, the hidden state of nodes in those layers and their nested layers were set to unhidden. MAXX-78169

Modeling
Corrected an issue with the Edit Poly modifier that could cause SAVE to take longer than expected. MAXX-78352
Corrected an issue where in very rare circumstances geometry data loaded in from 3ds Max 2021 thru 2023 that uses a weld operation (such as the Symmetry modifier) could appear corrupted when loaded in 3ds Max 2025. MAXX-76267
Resolved an issue where you were not able to use a true black color value for the Hard Edges Display in the Editable Poly object or Edit Poly modifier. MAXX-78178
When opening a 3ds Max scene where the "Display Hard Edges" option has been toggled ON with the Editable Poly object or the Edit Poly modifier was saved with the file, the display of the hard edges will now be correctly ON by default when the scene loads. MAXX-78177
Boolean Modifier icons should no longer disappear from the UI after performing an action such as Extract Operand. MAXX-76460
Particle Flow
Fixed a bug in Particle Flow around some operators referencing scene nodes that change from meshes to something else like a shape in their modifier stacks. PFlow was crashing attempting to handle the object as a mesh when it wasn’t anymore.

Known Issues and Workarounds
Viewports
The viewport gradient is not reset as expected if the background color has been changed (e.g., color or environment map). MAXX-77836
Workaround: Reset again.
Viewport Canvas
OCIO-based color-management modes do not get restored automatically after using the Viewport Canvas to paint. MAXX-78505
Workaround: Manually restore OCIO mode in the Color Management settings.
