The History of Manchuria, 1840-1948 A Sino-Russo-Japanese Triangle

English | ISBN: 1898823421 | 2016 | 736 pages | PDF | 15 MB
In A History of Manchuria, Ian Nish describes the turbulent times which the three Northeastern Provinces of China experienced in the last two centuries. The site of three serious wars in 1894, 1904 and 1919, the territory rarely enjoyed peace though its economy progressed because of the building of arterial railways. From 1932 it came under the rule of the Japanese-inspired government of Manchukuo based at Changchun. But that was short-lived, being brought to an end by the punitive incursion and occupation of the country by Soviet forces in 1945. Thereafter the devastated territory was fought over by Chinese Nationalist and Communist armies until Mukden (Shenyang) fell to the Communists in October 1948. Manchuria, under-populated but strategically important, was the location for disputes between China, Russia and Japan, the three powers making up the ‘triangle’ which gives the name to the sub-title of this study. These countries were hardly ever at peace with one another, the result being that the economic growth of a potentially wealthy country was seriously retarded. The story is illustrated by extracts drawn from contemporary documents of the three triangular powers.

English | February 28, 2020 | ISBN: 1843916568 | 256 pages | MOBI | 26 Mb
Seventy-one years ago, in 1948, the Nakba-the "catastrophe"-overturned life in Palestine, forcing three-quarters of Palestinians into exile, depriving them of their land, their homes, their belongings. Today, those who can bear witness to that period are becoming rare. From different social backgrounds, 19 men and women remember the coexistence that prevailed in Palestine, the war, the exile, as well as the strength and resilience which they had to muster to adapt to new realities. Life stories expressed in the first person are accompanied by black and white portraits where each look questions the coming generations. For every Palestinian, Jerusalem is charged with symbolic meaning, of identity and of remembrance, the more so because it has become inaccessible to most. The city is made the focus of a compilation of color photographs presented for a contemporary look, between shadow and light.

This book focuses on the relationship of Palestine-Germans with Arabs and Jews in the British Mandate of Palestine from 1933 to 1948/50: Young Germans marched through Haifa shouting Heil Hitler! and Swastika flags were hoisted at the German consulates. In 1931 a non-Jewish German made the initial contact with Nazi officials that led to the establishment of a miniature Third Reich with local Nazi groups. This is the first book in English on this bizarre footnote in history.
