American While Black African Americans, Immigration, and the Limits of Citizenship

Free Download American While Black: African Americans, Immigration, and the Limits of Citizenship by Niambi Michele Carter, Janina Edwards, Tantor Audio
English | 2020 | ISBN: B086R81KF8 | MP3@64 kbps | 8h 10m | 110 Mb
At the same time that the Civil Rights Movement brought increasing opportunities for blacks, the United States liberalized its immigration policy. While the broadening of the United States’s borders to non-European immigrants fits with a black political agenda of social justice, recent waves of immigration have presented a dilemma for blacks, prompting ambivalent or even negative attitudes toward migrants. What has an expanded immigration regime meant for how blacks express national attachment?
In this book, Niambi Michele Carter argues that immigration, both historically and in the contemporary moment, has served as a reminder of the limited inclusion of African Americans in the body politic. As Carter contends, blacks use the issue of immigration as a way to understand the nature and meaning of their American citizenship – specifically the way that white supremacy structures and constrains not just their place in the American political landscape, but their political opinions as well.

African American History From Emancipation Through Jim Crow

The abolition of slavery in 1865 did not bring about the kind of progress free Black men and women in America were hoping for. In fact, the late 19th and early 20th centuries were some of the darkest and most disturbing decades for African Americans in the United States. They could not participate in political life-not as voters and certainly not as politicians or legislators. They could not attend the same schools, serve in the same military brigades, work in the same factories, sit on the same buses, or drink from the same water fountains as their white counterparts. And their migration out of the Jim Crow South and into Northern cities was met with rampant economic discrimination and extreme violence.
Although the institution of slavery had been destroyed, its logic remained a powerful force in American life. While white supremacy continued unabated, politics, the economy, and society reflected this idealogy for decades to come.

English | 2021 | ISBN: B094SWKW7J | MP3@32 Kbps | Duration: 4:47 h | 65 Mb
This Very Short Introduction looks at Africa’s past and reflects on the changing ways it has been imagined and represented, both in Africa and beyond. The author illustrates important aspects of Africa’s history with a range of fascinating historical examples, drawn from over five millennia across this vast continent. The multitude of topics that the listener will learn about in this succinct work include the unity and diversity of African cultures, slavery, religion, colonial conquest, the diaspora, and the importance of history in understanding contemporary Africa. The book examines questions such as: Who invented the idea of "Africa"? How is African history pieced together, given such a lack of documentary evidence? How did Africa interact with the world 1,000 years ago?
Africa has been known as "the cradle of mankind", and its recoverable history stretches back to the Pharaohs. But the idea of studying African history is itself new, and the authors show why it is still contested and controversial. This VSI, the first concise work of its kind, will prove essential for anyone interested in the African continent and the diversity of human history.
