After Love Queer Intimacy and Erotic Economies in Post-Soviet Cuba

Free Download Noelle M. Stout, "After Love: Queer Intimacy and Erotic Economies in Post-Soviet Cuba"
English | ISBN: 0822356732 | 2014 | 248 pages | AZW3 | 805 KB
Focused on the intimate effects of large-scale economic transformations, After Love illuminates the ways that everyday efforts to imagine, resist, and enact market reforms shape sexual desires and subjectivities. Anthropologist Noelle M. Stout arrived in Havana in 2002 to study the widely publicized emergence of gay tolerance in Cuba but discovered that the sex trade was dominating everyday discussions among gays, lesbians, and travestis. Largely eradicated after the Revolution, sex work, including same-sex prostitution, exploded in Havana when the island was opened to foreign tourism in the early 1990s. The booming sex trade led to unprecedented encounters between Cuban gays and lesbians, and straight male sex workers and foreign tourists. As many gay Cuban men in their thirties and forties abandoned relationships with other gay men in favor of intimacies with straight male sex workers, these bonds complicated ideas about "true love" for queer Cubans at large. From openly homophobic hustlers having sex with urban gays for room and board, to lesbians disparaging sex workers but initiating relationships with foreign men for money, to gay tourists espousing communist rhetoric while handing out Calvin Klein bikini briefs, the shifting economic terrain raised fundamental questions about the boundaries between labor and love in late-socialist Cuba.

After Beethoven The Imperative of Originality in the Symphony

Free Download After Beethoven: The Imperative of Originality in the Symphony By Mark Evan Bonds
1997 | 224 Pages | ISBN: 0674008553 | PDF | 12 MB
Beethoven cast a looming shadow over the nineteenth century. For composers he was a model both to emulate and to overcome. "You have no idea how it feels," Brahms confided, "when one always hears such a giant marching behind one." Exploring the response of five composers–Berlioz, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Brahms, and Mahler–to what each clearly saw as the challenge of Beethoven’s symphonies, Evan Bonds richly enhances our understanding of the evolution of the symphony and Beethoven’s legacy. Overt borrowings from Beethoven–for example, the lyrical theme in the Finale of Brahms’ First Symphony, so like the "Ode to Joy" theme in Beethoven’s Ninth–have often been the subject of criticism. Bonds now shows us how composers imitate or allude to a Beethoven theme or compositional strategy precisely in order to turn away from it, creating a new musical solution. Berlioz’s Harold en Italie, Mendelssohn’s Lobgesang, Schumann’s Fourth Symphony, Brahms’ First, and Mahler’s Fourth serve as illuminating examples. Discussion focuses on such core issues as Beethoven’s innovations in formal design, the role of text and voice, fusion of diverse genres, cyclical coherence of movements, and the function of the symphonic finale. Bonds lucidly argues that the great symphonists of the nineteenth century cleared creative space for themselves by both confronting and deviating from the practices of their potentially overpowering precursor. His analysis places familiar masterpieces in a new light.

After Babel Aspects of Language and Translation

Free Download After Babel: Aspects of Language and Translation By George Steiner
1998 | 560 Pages | ISBN: 0192880934 | EPUB | 1 MB
When it first appeared in 1975, After Babel created a sensation, quickly establishing itself as both a controversial and seminal study of literary theory. In the original edition, Steiner provided readers with the first systematic investigation since the eighteenth century of the phenomenology and processes of translation both inside and between languages. Taking issue with the principal emphasis of modern linguistics, he finds the root of the "Babel problem" in our deep instinct for privacy and territory, noting that every people has in its language a unique body of shared secrecy. With this provocative thesis he analyzes every aspect of translation from fundamental conditions of interpretation to the most intricate of linguistic constructions. For the long-awaited second edition, Steiner entirely revised the text, added new and expanded notes, and wrote a new preface setting the work in the present context of hermeneutics, poetics, and translation studies. This new edition brings the bibliography up to the present with substantially updated references, including much Russian and Eastern European material. Like the towering figures of Derrida, Lacan, and Foucault, Steiner’s work is central to current literary thought. After Babel, Third Edition is essential reading for anyone hoping to understand the debates raging in the academy today.

It is clear that computation is playing an increasingly prominent role in the development of mathematics, as well as in the natural and social sciences. The work of Stephen Wolfram over the last several decades has been a salient part in this phenomenon helping founding the field of Complex Systems, with many of his constructs and ideas incorporated in his book A New Kind of Science (ANKS) becoming part of the scientific discourse and general academic knowledge-from the now established Elementary Cellular Automata to the unconventional concept of mining the Computational Universe, from today’s widespread Wolfram’s Behavioural Classification to his principles of Irreducibility and Computational Equivalence.
