It is increasingly being recognized that the experimental and theoretical study of the complex system brain requires the cooperation of many disciplines, in cluding biology, medicine, physics, chemistry, mathematics, computer science, linguistics, and others. In this way brain research has become a truly interdis ciplinary endeavor. Indeed, the most important progress is quite often made when different disciplines cooperate. Thus it becomes necessary for scientists to look across the fence surrounding their disciplines. The present book is written precisely in this spirit. It addresses graduate students, professors and scientists in a variety of fields, such as biology, medicine and physics. Be yond its mathematical representation the book gives ample space to verbal and pictorial descriptions of the main and, as I believe, fundamental new insights, so that it will be of interest to a general readership, too. I use this opportunity to thank my former students, some of whom are my present co-workers, for their cooperation over many years. Among them I wish to mention in particular M. Bestehorn, L. Borland, H. Bunz, A. Daf fertshofer, T. Ditzinger, E. Fischer, A. Fuchs, R. Haas, R. Honlinger, V. Jirsa, M. Neufeld, M. Ossig, D. Reimann, M. Schanz, G. Schoner, P. Tass, C. Uhl. My particular thanks go to R. Friedrich and A. Wunderlin for their constant help in many respects. Stimulating discussions with a number of colleagues from a variety of fields are also highly appreciated.

Nutraceuticals are defined as any food bioactive compounds or supplements which provide health and medicinal benefits, usually in the prevention of disease and sometimes playing a role in their treatment as well. Nutraceuticals are a combination of a variety of nutrients ranging from vitamins and minerals to certain amino acids. Nutrients are an essential part of the diet and serve a variety of roles in human physiology through various enzymes which govern biocatalysis in various metabolic pathways including tissue and DNA repair and body defense and immunity. Nutrients that are routinely prescribed as dietary supplements include multivitamins, minerals and certain specific amino acids. Nutraceuticals not only serve a pivotal role in tissue repair and body defense mechanism but also play a crucial role in various signal transduction and metabolic pathways. The deficiency of any crucial nutrient can negatively affect metabolic and transduction pathways which can lead toa variety of diseases and disorders. The preventive use of nutraceuticals is a promising new trend for a variety of diseases and disorders.

Computational Psycholinguistics An Interdisciplinary Approach to the Study of Language

Free Download Computational Psycholinguistics: An Interdisciplinary Approach to the Study of Language By Matthew W. Crocker (auth.)
1996 | 248 Pages | ISBN: 0792338065 | PDF | 22 MB
Computational Psycholinguistics: An Interdisciplinary Approach to theStudy of Language investigates the architecture and mechanisms which underlie the human capacity to process language. It is the first such study to integrate modern syntactic theory, cross-linguistic psychological evidence, and modern computational techniques in constructing a model of the human sentence processing mechanism. The monograph follows the rationalist tradition, arguing the central role of modularity and universal grammar in a theory of human linguistic performance. It refines the notion of `modularity of mind’, and presents a distributed model of syntactic processing which consists of modules aligned with the various informational `types’ associated with modern linguistic theories. By considering psycholinguistic evidence from a range of languages, a small number of processing principles are motivated and are demonstrated to hold universally. It is also argued that the behavior of modules, and the strategies operative within them, can be derived from an overarching `Principle of Incremental Comprehension’. Audience: The book is recommended to all linguists, psycholinguists, computational linguists, and others interested in a unified and interdisciplinary study of the human language faculty.

A Knowledge-Based Approach to Program Understanding

Free Download A Knowledge-Based Approach to Program Understanding By Salwa K. Abd-El-Hafiz, Victor R. Basili (auth.)
1995 | 119 Pages | ISBN: 0792396057 | PDF | 5 MB
Program understanding plays an important role in nearly all software related tasks. It is vital to the development, maintenance and reuse activities. Program understanding is indispensable for improving the quality of software development. Several development activities such as code reviews, debugging and some testing approaches require programmers to read and understand programs. Maintenance activities cannot be performed without a deep and correct understanding of the component to be maintained. Program understanding is vital to the reuse of code components because they cannot be utilized without a clear understanding of what they do. If a candidate reusable component needs to be modified, an understanding how it is designed is also required. of This monograph presents a· knowledge-based approach to the automation of program understanding. This approach generates rigorous program documentation mechanically by combining and building on strengths of a practical program decomposition method, the axiomatic correctness notation, and the knowledge based analysis approaches. More specifically, this approach documents programs by generating first order predicate logic annotations of their loops. In this approach, loops are classified according to their complexity levels. Based on this taxonomy, variations on the basic analysis approach that best fit each of the different classes are described. In general, mechanical annotation of loops is performed by first decomposing them using data flow analysis. This decomposition encapsulates interdependent statements in events, which can be analyzed individually.
