Transcultural Areas

Based on culture as a complex system of rules it is too obvious that each rule has a particular range which is only exceptionally congruent with national or natural borders. In general, cultural exchange is not limited by political borders or rivers, forests, seas, or mountains. Those areas are rather transcultural, which is especially true for markets and towns. Dealing with cities like Buenos Aires or Riga, regions like Podlachia (Poland), Northern Ireland, or Bukovina, and the area of the Danube river the case studies give evidence for this thesis. The book will be of interest to researchers and students in the fields of cultural and intercultural studies.

Teaching Writing in Chinese Speaking Areas

Free Download Teaching Writing in Chinese Speaking Areas By Mark Shiu Kee Shum, Lu De Zhang (auth.), Mark Shiu Kee Shum, Lu De Zhang (eds.)
2005 | 272 Pages | ISBN: 0387263926 | PDF | 16 MB
One of the most civilized nations in history, China has a long-standing writing tradition and many Chinese texts have become world treasures. However, the way the Chinese teach writing in various countries in contemporary times is little known to the outside world, especially in Western countries. Undoubtedly, the Chinese have had an established traditional method of writing instruction. However, recent social and political developments have created the perception amongst both practitioners and researchers of a need for change. Whilst certain socio-political changes, both in Mainland China and in the territories, acted as agents for reform of the teaching of composition, the shape these reforms are taking has been due to many different influences, coming both from inside the countries themselves and from foreign sources. Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore have each developed their own approach to the teaching of composition. Teaching Writing in Chinese Speaking Areas aims to provide an accurate picture of the diverse composition teaching contexts and approaches in these four regions and countries. This is the first book that systematically introduces recent developments in teaching composition in Chinese-speaking areas. It outlines current theories and paradigms originating both in the West and in China and Chinese-speaking territories and the way in which these have been adapted to suit the various cultural contexts and learning environments. The overview is of relevance not only to the East, but throughout the world.

Teaching Literacy across Content Areas

Free Download Tamara Collins-Parks Lasisi Ajayi, "Teaching Literacy across Content Areas"
English | ISBN: 1443890286 | 2016 | 325 pages | PDF | 3 MB
This book is written primarily for pre-service and in-service teachers of Literacy/English Language Arts, school administrators, literacy graduate education students, and literacy education researchers, and addresses the myriad of questions regarding the implementation of the Common Core State Standards. Classroom teachers and pre-service teachers are currently confronting questions such as how they can teach the Common Core State Standards to make sure they are fully addressing them; how they can have the time to teach students to have deeper understandings of the skills and concepts addressed in the Standards; what they can do to meet the learning needs of diverse students such as English language learners and students with learning disabilities; whether teachers of content areas are required to add reading instruction to their teaching responsibilities; whether the Standards tell teachers what to teach; and whether the document tells teachers how to implement the Standards in the classroom, among others. This book is designed to answer these questions and many others. Each chapter contains instructional practices, examples, vignettes, and illustrations that connect the Common Core State Standards to classroom practices, and thereby provide pre-service and in-service teachers with meaningful, relevant, and practical teaching strategies to prepare culturally, academically, and linguistically diverse students in California and other states of the nation for both career and college. In this regard, readers of this book will find that the authors have provided a pathway to better understand the Common Core State Standards, and will be able to use what they learn in the pages of this book to provide more effective instruction for their students across the disciplines to read, analyse, and critique complex texts and apply knowledge to solve practical, real-life problems.

A Guide to America’s National Heritage Areas A Guide to the Nation’s New Kind of National Park

Free Download A Guide to America’s National Heritage Areas: A Guide to the Nation’s New Kind of National Park by Robert Manning
English | June 15, 2022 | ISBN: 149306066X | 256 pages | MOBI | 70 Mb
There are fifty-five National Heritage Areas scattered across the US and they continue to grow in number and diversity. Though they’re not officially national parks, their conservation, education, and recreation related objectives echo those of the national parks: to conserve nationally significant natural and cultural landscapes and to make them available to the public for purposes of education, recreation, and sustainable tourism-related economic development. But the methods of achieving these objectives are different-very different-than those used in the national parks. While both national parks and NHAs are established by Congress, national parks are conventionally large areas of public land that are owned and managed by the National Park Service (NPS). NHAs take a more inclusive, partnership-based approach to their work; they offer local citizens, government at all levels, non-profit organizations, and private sector enterprises the opportunity to define, celebrate and conserve the natural, historic, cultural, scenic and recreational resources that have been vital in shaping their identity and destiny. NHAs are composed primarily of private lands; they’re living landscapes where participants reside, work and play. Each chapter in this guidebook describes the remarkable natural and cultural resources that define NHAs and highlights nearby visitor attractions, enticing readers to visit NHAs and to enjoy and appreciate the attractions offered.
