Automated Speaking Assessment: Using Language Technologies to Score Spontaneous Speech provides a thorough overview of state-of-the-art automated speech scoring technology as it is currently used at Educational Testing Service (ETS). Its main focus is related to the automated scoring of spontaneous speech elicited by TOEFL iBT Speaking section items, but other applications of speech scoring, such as for more predictable spoken responses or responses provided in a dialogic setting, are also discussed. The book begins with an in-depth overview of the nascent field of automated speech scoring―its history, applications, and challenges―followed by a discussion of psychometric considerations for automated speech scoring. The second and third parts discuss the integral main components of an automated speech scoring system as well as the different types of automatically generated measures extracted by the system features related to evaluate the speaking construct of communicative competence as measured defined by the TOEFL iBT Speaking assessment. Finally, the last part of the book touches on more recent developments, such as providing more detailed feedback on test takers’ spoken responses using speech features and scoring of dialogic speech. It concludes with a discussion, summary, and outlook on future developments in this area. Written with minimal technical details for the benefit of non-experts, this book is an ideal resource for graduate students in courses on Language Testing and Assessment as well as teachers and researchers in applied linguistics.

The Assessment and Treatment of Women Offenders An Integrative Perspective

Free Download The Assessment and Treatment of Women Offenders: An Integrative Perspective By Kelley Blanchette, Shelley L. Brown(auth.)
2006 | 189 Pages | ISBN: 0470864613 | PDF | 2 MB
There is a large body of research that provides guidance for those working with offenders on how they should be treated once they are in the correctional system. The problem is that most, if not all this research has been conducted on all male populations and it is assumed that women offenders are the same. However, women have different needs and support systems than men in some areas of their lives and it is unclear whether all research based on men can be generalized in this way. The book provides a review of the research literature to guide evidence-based practice in the assessment and treatment of adult female offenders. An historical overview of women’s crime and imprisonment will be followed by a global review of various theories of female criminality. The remainder of the book reviews the psychology of criminal conduct, with a specific focus on three psychological principles of effective intervention: risk, need and responsivity. Respectively, these principles set the "who", "what" and "how" for correctional intervention.Content: Chapter 1 The Extent and Nature of Female Offending and Incarceration Patterns (pages 1-14): Chapter 2 Theories of Female Offending (pages 15-40): Chapter 3 Assessment for Classification of Women Offenders (pages 41-52): Chapter 4 Assessing Women’s Risk (pages 53-82): Chapter 5 Assessing Women’s Needs (pages 83-113): Chapter 6 Responsivity, Treatment and Women Offenders (pages 115-136): Chapter 7 Conclusion (pages 138-147):

Technology Assessment of Dual-Use ICTs How to Assess Diffusion, Governance and Design

Free Download Technology Assessment of Dual-Use ICTs: How to Assess Diffusion, Governance and Design by Thea Riebe
English | July 1, 2023 | ISBN: 3658416661 | 336 pages | MOBI | 7.43 Mb
Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) are important to human, national, and even international security. IT research, artifacts, and knowledge that can be applied in military and civilian contexts, used as part of weapon systems, or cause significant harm are referred to as dual-use. Advances in artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, cybersecurity, and open source intelligence (OSINT) raise questions about their dual-use risks. But how can dual-use of such disparate technologies be assessed? Case studies are still lacking on how to assess dual-use ICT and how to enable sensitive and responsible dual-use design. To address the research gap, this cumulative dissertation uses Technology Assessment (TA) as an epistemological framework to bring together approaches of Critical Security Studies (CSS) as well as Value Sensitive Design (VSD) from the field of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). As a result, the dissertation systematizes the dual-use risks and scenarios of the selected ICTs and derives organizational and design implications.
