This introduction to astronomy and astrophysics provides an accessible and clear treatment of the fundamentals. Starting with experimental astronomy, observation techniques and structure and properties of the components of the solar system, this textbook enables the reader to understand the basics in astrophysics. The text is written from the experimental physics point of view, giving numerous real life examples and detailed instrumentation and experimental methods. This highly motivating presentation deepens the knowledge in a very accessible way. The second part of the text gives a concise introduction to stars and extra-solar planets. The stellar evolution and categorization is explained. The last part features cosmological models, galaxy evolution and large scale objects in the universe. Numerous problems with solutions are perfect for self-study.

This special issue of the international journal of cosmic physics, Astrophysics and Space Science, contains invited contributions delivered at the Second IEEE International Workshop on Plasma Astrophysics and Cosmology, held from 10 to 12 May 1993 in Princeton, New Jersey. The Workshop was sponsored by the NSF Division of Atmospheric Sciences, NASA Headquarters, Space Physics Division, and the Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. It was the purpose of the Workshop to update topics in Plasma Astrophysics and Cosmology presented at the First IEEE International Workshop on Plasma Cosmology, La Jolla, California, 20-22 February 1989, and to again bring together observers and theorists to discuss the related links between plasma theory and observation. Another goal of the Workshop and these proceedings was to highlight the Centennial Celebration (1896-1996) of the founding of Plasma Astrophysics and Cosmology and several papers are devoted to the history of this field of science.

2003 | 511 Pages | ISBN: 9048163234 | PDF | 11 MB
This volume contains the Proceedings of the Fifth Scientific Meeting of the Spanish Astronomical Society (Sociedad Espanola de Astronomfa, SEA). The meeting was held at the Universidad de Castilla La Mancha in Toledo, from September 9 to 13, 2002. The event brought together 219 participants who pre sented their latest results in many different subjects. In comparison with the previous scientific meetings of the Society, the numbers of oral talks and poster contributions (122 and 64, respectively) are rapidly increasing, confirming that the SEA conferences are becoming a point of reference to assess the interests and achievements of astrophysical research in Spain. During the meeting, the SEA made public the granting of the Prize to the Best Spanish Ph. D. Thesis in As tronomy and Astrophysics for the period 2000-2001 ex aequo to Dr. A. Zurita and Dr. E. Villaver. This is the second time that the SEA is awarding this prize, which aim is to encourage young spanish astrophysicists to pursue a high level scientific career. The Society is indebted to the Universidad de Castilla La Mancha, and, in particular, to the San Pedro Martir staff, for its hospitality. It is also indebted to the Local Organizing Committee for its dedication and the good atmosphere that prevailed at any moment, and to the Scientific Organizing Committee for its excel lent work.

Currents in High-Energy Astrophysics

Free Download Currents in High-Energy Astrophysics By G. Kanbach (auth.), Maurice M. Shapiro, Rein Silberberg, John P. Wefel (eds.)
1995 | 336 Pages | ISBN: 9401041121 | PDF | 37 MB
This volume comprises selected lectures presented in the Ninth Course of the International School of Cosmic-Ray Astrophysics held at the Ettore Majorana Centre in Erice, Sicily, May 7–18, 1994. Devoted to problems and prospects in high-energy astrophysics and cosmology, the major areas explored are: gamma-ray, X-ray, and neutrino astronomies; cosmic rays; pulsars and supernova remnants; and cosmology, as well as cosmogony. Among the principal developments in gamma-ray astrophysics are those generated by the COMPTON Gamma Ray Observatory. Cosmic neutrinos at MeV energies, i.e., those from the Sun and from Supernova 1987a, are discussed, as well as neutrino masses in astrophysics. The source composition of cosmic rays, and extensive air shower experiments, receive special attention. The early universe according to COBE data, and as viewed by theorists of cosmology, is reviewed. Finally, the connections with particle physics occasioned a timely description of the Standard Model of elementary particles. The cosmic-ray community, the International School of Cosmic-Ray Astrophysics, and indeed the world of science have recently suffered grievous losses in the demise of Pierre Auger, Giuseppe Occhialini, and Bruno Rossi. Accordingly, a memorial session was included in the program. In the same session a farewell tribute was paid by M.M. Shapiro and A.E. Smith to the late Kyoung Hye Moon, an enthusiastic student of our School, who missed this Course when a rampant illness cut short her promising career.

Radiative Processes in High Energy Astrophysics

Free Download Radiative Processes in High Energy Astrophysics By Gabriele Ghisellini (auth.)
2013 | 147 Pages | ISBN: 3319006118 | PDF | 3 MB
This book grew out of the author’s notes from his course on Radiative Processes in High Energy Astrophysics. The course provides fundamental definitions of radiative processes and serves as a brief introduction to Bremsstrahlung and black body emission, relativistic beaming, synchrotron emission and absorption, Compton scattering, synchrotron self-compton emission, pair creation and emission. The final chapter discusses the observed features of Active Galactic Nuclei and their interpretation based on the radiative processes presented in the book. Written in an informal style, this book will guide students through their first encounter with high-energy astrophysics.

Aeronomy of Mars (Astrophysics and Space Science Library, 469)

Free Download Aeronomy of Mars (Astrophysics and Space Science Library, 469) by S. A. Haider
English | August 18, 2023 | ISBN: 9819931371 | 271 pages | MOBI | 25 Mb
"Mangalyaan was launched on November 5, 2013, to Mars by Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). On October 2, 2022, ISRO declared that Mangalyaan had lost communications with Earth. Mars Color Camera (MCC) on-board Mangalyaan has taken thousands pictures of Mars. A full disk of Mars image observed by Viking is shown on the cover page of this book. Mars is covered by the dust as observed by Mangalyaan (from Arya et al., 2015). This book presents the atmospheric and ionospheric results obtained from all missions to Mars. It also covers various atmospheric and ionospheric models of Mars. Broadly speaking, the planet’s atmosphere can be divided into two regions: lower and upper. These two regions can be coupled due to the propagation of energy from the lower to the upper atmosphere. The first-ever book on the aeronomy of Mars, this work is intended to help students and researchers familiarize themselves with the field of aeronomy. In addition, it helps planetary probe designers, engineers, and other users in the scientific community, e.g., planetary geologists and geophysicists".

Author: Dr. Matthew Bothwell
Narrator: Homer Todiwala

Learn how to destroy the universe with the power of astrophysics! Based on real questions from children, expert author Dr. Matt Bothwell has created the Supervillain Academy to teach astrophysics to middle graders. "Could you crash the Moon into the Earth?" "If the Sun explodes, would we all get vaporised?" "What’s the weather like on Mercury?" Discover the answers to these questions and many more at the Supervillain Academy: the magnificently morbid school for young bad guys-in-training. Facts about space are all well and good, but discovering that if you threw someone into a black hole, they would be spaghettified-stretched out long and thin before getting squashed smaller than an atom-is truly, fascinatingly gruesome. At the Supervillain Academy, listeners will learn about the solar system, galaxies, the universe, and, most importantly, the answer to the question "Which planet is entirely populated by robots?".
