Compact Objects in Astrophysics White Dwarfs, Neutron Stars and Black Holes

Free Download Compact Objects in Astrophysics: White Dwarfs, Neutron Stars and Black Holes By Professor Max Camenzind (auth.)
2007 | 682 Pages | ISBN: 3540257705 | PDF | 10 MB
Compact objects are an important class of astronomical objects in current research. Supermassive black holes play an important role in the understanding of the formation of galaxies in the early Universe. Old white dwarfs are nowadays used to calibrate the age of the Universe. Mergers of neutron stars and black holes are the sources of intense gravitational waves which will be measured in the next ten years by gravitational wave detectors.Camenzind’s Compact Objects in Astrophysics gives a comprehensive introduction and up-to-date overview about the physical processes behind these objects, covering the field from the beginning to most recent results, including all relevant observations. After a presentation of the taxonomy of compact objects, the basic principles of general relativity are given. The author then discusses in detail the physics and observations of white dwarfs and neutron stars (including the most recent equations of state for neutron star matter), the gravitational field of rapidly rotating compact objects, rotating black holes (including ray tracing and black hole magnetospheres), gravitational waves, and the new understanding of accretion processes by means of the magnetorotational instability of accretion disks. This modern treatise of compact object astrophysics uses the 3+1 split approach to Einstein’s equations, and to relativistic hydrodynamics and magnetohydrodynamics. In each chapter problems and solutions help deepen the understanding of the subject. Both advanced students and researchers will appreciate this book as an advanced textbook and reference on this fascinating field of astrophysics.

The First Stars (ESO Astrophysics Symposia)

Free Download Achim Weiss, Tom G. Abel, Vanessa Hill, "The First Stars: Proceedings of the MPA/ESO Workshop Held at Garching, Germany, 4-6 August 1999 (ESO Astrophysics Symposia)"
English | 2000 | pages: 351 | ISBN: 3540672222, 3662309416 | PDF | 23,0 mb
Neither the formation process of "The First Stars" nor their existence in the present universe is known with any certainty. The authors of this volume address all open questions presenting an abundance of interesting data at the same time as giving a relatively exhaustive overview of our present-day knowledge. This covers research from spectroscopic observations, stellar evolutions, nucleosynthesis, structure and galaxy formation. The contributions shed new light on past views, often questioning traditional interpretations. Dealing with problems at the crossroads of cosmology, star formation and chemical evolution in stars, the book addresses astrophysicists and researchers, as well as graduate students. However, it should also be of interest to nuclear physicists and astrochemists.

Fundamentals of Astrophysics

Free Download Fundamentals of Astrophysics: Astrophysical Methods
English | 2024 | ISBN: 3031605667 | 825 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 101 MB
This textbook introduces the reader to the study of astrophysics through a journey that spans the fields of physics, mathematics, and technology. Based on the author’s extensive teaching experience, it emphasizes the fundamental observational data and theoretical methods employed for constructing models of stars, galaxies, and large-scale structures in the universe. After an introduction outlining the historical development of universe studies, Part I delves into gravitational theories including basic general relativity and gravitational waves. Part II explores radiation and plasma processes crucial for interpreting observed data and modeling cosmic objects. Part III addresses the observational techniques essential in astrophysics, along with the analysis of astrophysical parameters obtained from photometry and spectroscopy.

Tides in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Free Download Tides in Astronomy and Astrophysics by Jean Souchay, Stéphane Mathis, Tadashi Tokieda
English | PDF (True) | 2013 | 384 Pages | ISBN : 3642329608 | 13 MB
Based on the lecture notes of a school titled ‘Tides in Astronomy and Astrophysics’ that brought together students and researchers, this book focuses on the fundamental theories of tides at different scales of the universe-from tiny satellites to whole galaxies-and on the most recent developments. It also attempts to place the study of tides in a historical perspective.Starting with a general tutorial on tides, the theme of tides is approached in 9 chapters from many directions. They allow non-experts to pick up a physical intuition and a sense of orders of magnitude in the theory of tides. These carefully prepared lecture notes by leaders in the field include many illustrative figures and drawings. Some even offer a variety of simple back-of the-envelope problems.

Gravitation in Astrophysics

With the discovery of pulsars, quasars, and galactic X-ray sources in the late 60’s and early 70’s, and the coincident expansion in the search for gravitational waves, rela tivistic gravity assumed an important place in the astrophysics of localized objects. Only by pushing Einstein’s solar-system-tested general theory of relativity to the study of the extremes of gravitational collapse and its outcomes did it seem that one could explain these frontier astronomical phenomena. This conclusion continues to be true today. Relativistic gravity had always played the central role in cosmology. The discov ery of the cosmic background radiation in 1965, the increasing understanding of matter physics at high energies in the decades following, and the growing wealth of observations on the large scale structure meant that it was possible to make increasingly detailed mod els of the universe, both today and far in the past. This development, not accidentally, was contemporary to that for localized objects described above.
