Disorders of Attention (Neural Network Model Applications and Implications)

This is the fourth book in the Neural Network series. It proposes an entirely new model for assessing and understanding how issues with attention are manifested. Currently, most individuals with deficit in attentional functioning are labeled with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. This is because the current nosology is behaviorally driven and the target behavior for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is the end stage global behavior, attention. The use of this nosology results in a large number of related but neuroanatomically different issues, from a neural network perspective, being lumped together. This results in a homogenous approach to the treatment of a heterogeneous cluster of problems and impedes research into the actual underlying network properties of specific forms of attentional problems.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder ADHD Epidemiology, Treatment and Prevention

English | ISBN: 1634831284 | 2015 | 402 pages | PDF | 6 MB
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder with underlying brain anatomical and functional measures, as well as familial/genetic factors that are major foci of neuropsychiatric research. In recent years, ADHD is one of the neuropsychiatric diseases receiving more attention in scientific literature. During this decade, numerous studies were published on the implementation of diagnostic criteria and assessment tools for clinical research and the social impact of the disease, which continued to discuss genetic and neurobiological aspects. Psychostimulants are highly effective medications for the treatment of ADHD, and the development of long-acting stimulant formulations has greatly expanded the treatment options for individuals with ADHD. However, despite the established efficacy of the stimulants in ADHD, 10-30% of the adolescent population with ADHD does not respond to stimulants or may not tolerate them due to side effects. The potential for abuse and the stigma of a controlled medication are reasons to consider alternatives to stimulants in children and adolescents with ADHD. Traditionally, ADHD is regarded as a childhood disorder, but it is now clear that ADHD affects both children and adults. Many adults with ADHD are undiagnosed and untreated. Thus, the negative outcomes reported by most follow-up studies may be a consequence of untreated symptoms. The diagnosis of ADHD is broad and heterogeneous, with multiple causes being of neurological, paediatric and psycho-social nature. With this in mind, it must always be done rigorously by a multidisciplinary team.

Attention and Performance in Computational Vision

Inappliedresearch, the development of enabling technologies such as miniaturized mobile sensors, video surveillance systems, and ambient intelligence systems involves the real-time analysis of enormous quantities of data. Knowledge has to be applied about what needs to be attendedto, andwhen, andwhattodoinameaningfulsequence, incorrespondencewith visual feedback. Methods on attention and control are mandatory to render computer vision systems more robust. The 2nd International Workshop on Attention and Performance in Computational Vision (WAPCV 2004) was held in the Czech Technical University of Prague, Czech Republic, as an associated workshop of the 8th European Conference on Computer – sion (ECCV 2004). The goal of this workshop was to provide an interdisciplinary forum tocommunicatecomputationalmodelsofvisualattentionfromvariousviewpoints, such as from computer vision, psychology, robotics and neuroscience. The motivation for – terdisciplinarity was communication and inspiration beyond the individual community, to focus discussion on computational modelling, to outline relevant objectives for p- formance comparison, to explore promising application domains, and to discuss these with reference to all related aspects of cognitive vision. The workshop was held as a single-day, single-track event, consisting of high-quality podium and poster presen- tions. Invited talks were given by John K. Tsotsos about attention and feature binding in biologically motivated computer vision and by Gustavo Deco about the context of attention, memory and reward from the perspective of computational neuroscience. The interdisciplinary program committee wascomposed of 21 internationally r- ognized researchers.

Attention and Implicit Learning (Advances in Consciousness Research)

Free Download Luis Jiménez, "Attention and Implicit Learning (Advances in Consciousness Research)"
English | 2003 | pages: 396 | ISBN: 1588113353 | PDF | 1,9 mb
Attention and Implicit Learning provides a comprehensive overview of the research conducted in this area. The book is conceived as a multidisciplinary forum of discussion on the question of whether implicit learning may be depicted as a process that runs independently of attention. The volume also deals with the complementary question of whether implicit learning affects the dynamics of attention, and it addresses these questions from perspectives that range from functional to neuroscientific and computational approaches. The view of implicit learning that arises from these pages is not that of a mysterious faculty, but rather that of an elementary ability of the cognitive systems to extract the structure of their environment as it appears directly through experience, and regardless of any intention to do so. Implicit learning, thus, is taken to be a process that may shape not only our behavior, but also our representations of the world, our attentional functions, and even our conscious experience. Drawing on evidence from cognitive science, Part I offers an easy-to-understand explanation of the process of memory and highlights certain barriers that hinder students’ ability to learn. Part II introduces over a century of research into two widely applicable learning strategies and, drawing on the author’s extensive teaching experience, demonstrates a plethora of classroom applications that maximize learning while working within the known constraints of human memory.

The power of capital is the power to target our attention, mould market-ready identities, and reduce the public realm to an endless series of choices. This has far-reaching implications for our psychological, physical and spiritual well-being, and ultimately for our global ecology. In this consumer age, the underlying teachings of Buddhist mindfulness offer more than individual well-being and resilience. They also offer new sources of critical inquiry into our collective condition, and may point, in time, to regulatory initiatives in the field of well-being.
