Americans knew polio as the "summer plague." In countries further North, however, the virus arrived later in the year. It was described by one writer as "the autumn ghost."
Intensive care units and mechanical ventilation are the crucial foundation of modern medical care: without them, the appalling death toll of the COVID-19 pandemic would be even higher. In The Autumn Ghost, Dr. Hannah Wunsch traces the origins of these two innovations back to a polio epidemic in the autumn of 1952. Drawing together testimony from doctors, nurses, medical students, and patients, Wunsch relates a gripping tale of an epidemic that changed the world.
Wunsch tells the true story of how insiders and iconoclasts came together in one overwhelmed hospital in Copenhagen to save the lives of many polio patients dying of respiratory failure. Their radical advances in care marked a turning point in the treatment of patients around the world-from the rise of life support and the creation of intensive care units to the evolution of rehabilitation medicine.

On 20 October 1944, the U.S. Sixth Army began landing on Leyte’s eastern coast, supported by the U.S. Navy’s 3rd and 7th fleets, which were assisted by ships from the Royal Australian Navy. The Japanese were aware that the Americans were poised to attack the Philippines and planned to draw the American warships into one last great battle to try and stave off the otherwise inevitable defeat. Over the course of the following three days, the two naval forces engaged in four separate engagements. Involving more than 360 ships and 200,000 naval personnel, the battle was the greatest naval encounter of the World War II and possibly the largest naval battle in history.

Death in Florence the Medici, Savonarola, and the battle for the soul of a Renaissance city

Free Download Paul Strathern, "Death in Florence: the Medici, Savonarola, and the battle for the soul of a Renaissance city"
English | 2016 | pages: 456 | ISBN: 1681772302, 160598826X | EPUB | 1,2 mb
By the end of the fifteenth century, Florence was well established as the home of the Renaissance. As generous patrons to the likes of Botticelli and Michelangelo, the ruling Medici embodied the progressive humanist spirit of the age, and in Lorenzo de’ Medici they possessed a diplomat capable of guarding the militarily weak city in a climate of constantly shifting allegiances. In Savonarola, an unprepossessing provincial monk, Lorenzo found his nemesis. Filled with Old Testament fury, Savonarola’s sermons reverberated among a disenfranchised population, who preferred medieval Biblical certainties to the philosophical interrogations and intoxicating surface glitter of the Renaissance. The battle between these two men would be a fight to the death, a series of sensational events-invasions, trials by fire, the ‘Bonfire of the Vanities’, terrible executions and mysterious deaths-featuring a cast of the most important and charismatic Renaissance figures. In an exhilaratingly rich and deeply researched story, Paul Strathern reveals the paradoxes, self-doubts, and political compromises that made the battle for the soul of the Renaissance city one of the most complex and important moments in Western history.

English | 2024 | ISBN: 1009425692 | 265 Pages | PDF | 1.3 MB
Benjamin Netanyahu has carefully cultivated a self-image as Israel’s ‘Mr. Security’ during his decades of political activity. His reputation as a security-minded leader has resonated with large swathes of the Israeli public, enabling him to become Israel’s longest-serving prime minister. Yet the Israeli security community has long questioned Netanyahu’s approach to national security. The Netanyahu era has seen unprecedented civil-military tensions, while retired generals and former heads of the Mossad and Shin Bet intelligence agencies, some of whom were appointed by Netanyahu, have publicly rejected both his leadership and his policies. Drawing on interviews with dozens of senior veterans of the Israeli security establishment, this book addresses this intriguing paradox. It sets out to explain the mutual distrust and intense disagreements between Netanyahu and the security community, as well as the underlying reasons behind the Israeli public’s inattention to the collective judgment of hundreds of ex-generals and former spymasters.
