During Britain’s desperate struggle for survival that in the summer of 1940, the Dornier Do 17 played a prominent part in raids designed at neutralizing the RAF’s ability to resist and the British people’s will to fight back. Having been built to outrun contemporary fighters when introduced into the Luftwaffe in 1937, it had become the Luftwaffe’s main light bomber, and for the attack against Britain, three bomber wings, KG 2, KG3 and KG77, were equipped with the Do 17. But by 1940, the Do 17 was nearing obsolescence and, with its weak defensive armament, it fell prey to Fighter Command’s Hurricanes and Spitfires.

The Battle of Britain (2024)

Free Download Jon Lake – The Battle of Britain
Amber Books | 2000 | ISBN: 1552670074 | English | 261 pages | PDF | 115.02 MB
One of the most pervasive views of the Battle of Britain was that heavily out-numbered but superior British pilots won their victory against overwhelming German forces through grit, courage and skill alone. This common perception, still widely held, also lays great stress on the wartime propagandist belief that the German fighter pilots were no match for their opponents. Yet it is worth reinvestigating the truth of what actually happened, as the Battle was in many ways a victory for the RAF’s cautious tactics, tactics that ensured the survival of a Fighter Command which, though more than equal in courage and determination, was no match for the Germans when it came to combat experience and tactical expertise. The Battle was a ‘close run thing’, and if we ignore the German bomber losses, the Jagdwaffe caused greater damage than it sustained from Fighter Command.

Spitfire The Battle of Britain’s Iconic Interceptor (Aeroplane Icons) (2024)

Kelsey Publishing | 2014 | ISBN: 190978608X | English | 132 pages | PDF | 128.71 MB
The Spitfire is undoubtedly the most famous British aircraft of all time. The mere mention of the name is enough to summon up vivid mental images of aerial combat, and tumultuous battles high above the puff y clouds rolling across southern England. Of course for most people these images are purely imaginary as so few survivors have fi rst-hand experience of the Battle of Britain. But the Spitfire’s almost legendary status has endured and more than seventy years after its fi nest hour, it is still regarded as the classical ultimate expression of fi ghter aircraft design. Precisely why the Spitfire has earned this status isn’t too diffi cult to establish, and it would be fair to say that the aircraft was in many respects no more advanced than other contemporary designs. The Spitfire was however, a shining example of being in the right place at the right time. It performed well, it could be manufactured relatively easily, and it could be made available to the Royal Air Force at the very time when it was needed so badly.
