H.M.S. Warrior, ‘the black snake among rabbits’ was Britain’s first iron-clad warship. The author describes this most revolutionary warship of her time, perhaps of all time, explains why she fell into disuse and, in doing so, covers some of the wider issues relating to naval warfare during this important period of British history. The book has special appeal now as the restoration of the ship nears completion and plans are developed to move her to the maritime museum in Portsmouth.

Battleship Ramillies The Final Salvo

HMS Ramillies was the last battleship to join the Grand Fleet in 1917 and survived to fight in the Second World War. Although the ship did not make headlines, she was actively employed from start to finish, and even survived being torpedoed by a Japanese submarine. In this respect she was typical rather than extraordinary but, like any large ship, to her crew she was unique – she was certainly the only ship in British naval history whose captain wore a grass skirt into battle (honoring a Maori belief that the ship would come to no harm while he did so; Ramillies survived the war).

The book tells the stories of the 3 types of warships in the Royal Navy from pre WWI to the end of WWII. There is an excellent text but what makes the book outstanding is the myriad of pictures but is unfortunate they are all in black and white. A must for anyone interested in the history of the Royal Navy.

Naval Firepower Battleship Guns and Gunnery in the Dreadnought Era

Free Download Norman Friedman – Naval Firepower: Battleship Guns and Gunnery in the Dreadnought Era
Naval Institute Press | 2008 | ISBN: 1591145554 | English | 328 pages | PDF | 229.14 MB
For more than a half a century the big gun was the arbiter of naval power, but it was useless if it could not hit the target fast and hard enough to prevent the enemy doing the same. Because the naval gun platform was itself in motion, finding a ‘firing solution’ was a significant problem made all the more difficult when gun sizes increased and fighting ranges lengthened and seemingly minor issues like wind velocity had to be factored in. This heavily illustrated book outlines for the first time in layman’s terms the complex subject of fire-control equipment and electro-mechanical computing.

The Battleship Dreadnought (Anatomy of the Ship) (2024)

Free Download John Roberts – The Battleship Dreadnought (Anatomy of the Ship)
Conway Maritime Press | 2001 | ISBN: 085177895X | English | 258 pages | PDF | 151.67 MB
Launched in 1906, HMS Dreadnought was the first ‘all-big-gun’ battleship and as such revolutionised battleship design for more than a generation. She was built at Portsmouth in 14 months, a record which has never been equalled, and when she was launched she was superior in both firepower and speed to anything then afloat. Perhaps even more radical than her design was the proposal to adopt Parsons turbines which at the time had been hardly tested. Though she saw little action during her career, her influence was profound and she gave her name to a class of ship that dominated the high seas for more than a generation.
