Borders of Belonging investigates a pressing but previously unexplored aspect of immigration in America―the impact of immigration policies and practices not only on undocumented migrants, but also on their family members, some of whom possess a form of legal status. Heide Castañeda reveals the trauma, distress, and inequalities that occur daily, alongside the stratification of particular family members’ access to resources like education, employment, and health care. She also paints a vivid picture of the resilience, resistance, creative responses, and solidarity between parents and children, siblings, and other kin.

Belonging Together Dealing with the Politics of Disenchantment in Australian Indigenous Affairs Policy

Free Download Patrick Sullivan, "Belonging Together: Dealing with the Politics of Disenchantment in Australian Indigenous Affairs Policy"
English | 2011 | ISBN: 0855757809 | EPUB | pages: 192 | 0.4 mb
Comprehensive and optimistic, this examination describes current Indigenous affairs policy in Australia, concentrating on the period following the end of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission in 2004. It provides a unique overview of the trajectory of current policy, advancing a new consolidated approach to Indigenous policy that moves beyond the debate over self-determination and assimilation. Arguing that the interests of Indigenous peoples, settlers, and immigrants are fundamentally shared, it proposes adaptation on both sides, but particularly for the descendants of settlers and immigrants. Advancing the body of knowledge in the field of the anthropology of policy and public administration, this empirical study is a must-read for policymakers, academics, and Indigenous peoples alike.

Economies of Abandonment Social Belonging and Endurance in Late Liberalism

Free Download Elizabeth A. Povinelli, "Economies of Abandonment: Social Belonging and Endurance in Late Liberalism"
English | ISBN: 082235084X | 2011 | 256 pages | AZW3 | 732 KB
In Economies of Abandonment, Elizabeth A. Povinelli explores how late liberal imaginaries of tense, eventfulness, and ethical substance make the global distribution of life and death, hope and harm, and endurance and exhaustion not merely sensible but also just. She presents new ways of conceptualizing formations of power in late liberalism-the shape that liberal governmentality has taken as it has responded to a series of legitimacy crises in the wake of anticolonial and new social movements and, more recently, the "clash of civilizations" after September 11. Based on longstanding ethnographic work in Australia and the United States, as well as critical readings of legal, academic, and activist texts, Povinelli examines how alternative social worlds and projects generate new possibilities of life in the context of ordinary and extraordinary acts of neglect and surveillance. She focuses particularly on social projects that have not yet achieved a concrete existence but persist at the threshold of possible existence. By addressing the question of the endurance, let alone the survival, of alternative forms of life, Povinelli opens new ethical and political questions.

English | 2000 | ISBN: 0333643100, 0333643097 | PDF | pages: 273 | 27.0 mb
Globalization creates new challenges for citizenship: boundaries are being blurred and nation-state powers eroded. Millions of people have multiple citizenship, millions more lack citizenship of their country of residence. Cultural heterogeneity is escalating. There are increasing numbers of citizens who do not belong. This undermines the nation-state as the central site of democracy. New approaches are needed, which take account of complex identities and transnational belonging, and which allow for democratic control of power at all its proliferating levels.

English | ISBN: 0520269594 | 2011 | 312 pages | PDF | 2 MB
Since the 1990s, migration from Mexico to the United States has moved beyond the borderlands to diverse communities across the country, with the most striking transformations in American suburbs and small towns. This study explores the challenges encountered by Mexican families as they endeavor to find their place in the U.S. by focusing on Kennett Square, a small farming village in Pennsylvania known as the "Mushroom Capital of the World." In a highly readable account based on extensive fieldwork among Mexican migrants and their American neighbors, Debra Lattanzi Shutika explores the issues of belonging and displacement that are central concerns for residents in communities that have become new destinations for Mexican settlement. Beyond the Borderlands also completes the circle of migration by following migrant families as they return to their hometown in Mexico, providing an illuminating perspective of the tenuous lives of Mexicans residing in, but not fully part of, two worlds.
