Bridges are subject to daily and seasonal temperature fluctuations. The temperature variations can affect bridge materials and structural integrity, often interacting with other loads and masking their effects. Understanding temperature behaviors is crucial for accurate load assessment and bridge performance evaluation.

Cable Supported Composite Bridges (EPUB)

Free Download Cable Supported Composite Bridges by Changyu Shao
English | EPUB (True) | 2023 | 778 Pages | ISBN : 9819932076 | 144.1 MB
This book introduces the latest developments in long-span cable-supported composite cable-stayed bridges, suspension bridges, and mid- and through-type cable-supported composite arch bridges. Based on the engineering application and practice of cable-supported composite bridges, this book systematically expounds the structural systems of these bridge types. It also summarizes the main construction methods, analyzes the mechanical properties of cable-stayed bridges and suspension bridges with composite girders and the influence rule with alternative spans, and proposes the reasonable span range based on economic efficiency. The prospect of using orthotropic composite bridge decks in long-span cable-supported bridges is also analyzed. This book is a valuable reference for both bridge professional technicians and graduate students for research, design and construction.

Building Bridges Is there hope for North Korea

Free Download Rob Chidley, "Building Bridges: Is there hope for North Korea?"
English | 2013 | ISBN: 0745955983 | EPUB | pages: 240 | 1.1 mb
For sixty years North Korea has had neither war nor peace; simply an Armistice signed in 1953 – this lack of resolution has perpetuated instability, fear, and a risk of further tragedy. Behind the backdrop is the ever present danger of a major conflict. Lord Alton suggests that there is a better way to relate to the pariah state. There are many issues to be addressed; including serious concerns over the grave, systematic and widespread violation of human rights, including reported executions, torture, violations of religious freedom and humanitarian concerns. Lord Alton argues that through patient but firm engagement, this situation is capable of resolution. Distinguishing between an antipathy towards a decaying political ideology and a love of the dignified and courageous Korean people must remain the central concern – we must encourage the tiny shoots of hope and above all build bridges through constructive, critical engagement.

Bridges, Borders, and Breaks History, Narrative, and Nation in Twenty-First-Century Chicanao Literary Criticism

Free Download William Orchard, Yolanda Padilla, "Bridges, Borders, and Breaks: History, Narrative, and Nation in Twenty-First-Century Chicana/o Literary Criticism"
English | 2016 | ISBN: 0822964147 | PDF | pages: 255 | 11.1 mb
This volume reassesses the field of Chicana/o literary studies in light of the rise of Latina/o studies, the recovery of a large body of early literature by Mexican Americans, and the "transnational turn" in American studies. The chapters reveal how "Chicano" defines a literary critical sensibility as well as a political one and show how this view can yield new insights about the status of Mexican Americans, the legacies of colonialism, and the ongoing prospects for social justice. Chicana/o literary representations emerge as significant examples of the local that interrogate globalization’s attempts to erase difference. They also highlight how Chicana/o literary studies’ interests in racial justice and the minority experience have produced important intersections with new disciplines while also retaining a distinctive character. The recalibration of Chicana/o literary studies in light of these shifts raises important methodological and disciplinary questions, which these chapters address as they introduce the new tools required for the study of Chicana/o literature at this critical juncture.

Bridges of Friendship Reflections on Indonesia’s Early Independence and Australia’s Volunteer Graduate Scheme

Free Download Ann McCarthy, "Bridges of Friendship: Reflections on Indonesia’s Early Independence and Australia’s Volunteer Graduate Scheme "
English | ISBN: 1925495221 | 2017 | 256 pages | PDF | 11 MB
This volume casts new light on the intercultural and personal ties among Indonesians and Australians in the context of the post-war rise of secular volunteering, and the unique political and social conditions then prevailing in the newly formed Indonesian Republic. It brings together previously unpublished manuscripts by Betty Feith, who has a lifelong involvement in church and humanitarian service, and by Kurnianingrat Ali Sastroamijoyo, an educator and someone who took an active part in the Indonesian Revolution. The first two parts include substantive works of historical narrative and memoir. The third part is a collection of letters that provides a bird’s-eye view of the ethos and workings of the Volunteer Graduate Scheme, an initiative under which Australian graduates were employed in the Indonesian civil service. Betty’s nuanced and insightful narrative reflects her intimate involvement in the inception and running of the Volunteer Graduate Scheme, while Kurnianingrat’s reminiscences, ‘Other Worlds in the Past’, offer insights into Indonesian social and cultural history at a critical time for the nation at the same time as they chronicle Kurnianingrat’s own experiences and perspective. Kurnianingrat’s memoirs include a fascinating and moving account of daily life in occupied Yogyakarta during the struggle for independence against the Dutch. In the 1950s, Indonesians Kurnianingrat and Harumani Rudolph-Sudirdjo formed lasting friendships with Australian volunteer graduates, Betty Feith and Ailsa Thomson Zainuddin. The mutual interests, connections and commitments among this circle of friends are illustrated in the final section of Bridges of Friendship.
