Healing Psychiatry Bridging the ScienceHumanism Divide

Free Download Healing Psychiatry: Bridging the Science/Humanism Divide by David H. Brendel, T.M. Luhrmann
English | 2006 | ISBN: 0262025949 | 200 Pages | PDF | 712.0 KB
Psychiatry today is torn by opposing sensibilities. Is it primarily a science of brain functioning or primarily an art of understanding the human mind in its social and cultural context? Competing conceptions of mental illness as amenable to scientific explanation or as deeply complex and beyond the reach of empirical study have left the field conceptually divided between science and humanism. In Healing Psychiatry David Brendel takes a novel approach to this stubborn problem. Drawing on the classical American pragmatism of Charles Sanders Peirce, William James, and John Dewey, as well as contemporary work of pragmatic bioethicists, Brendel proposes a "clinical pragmatism" that synthesizes scientific and humanistic approaches to mental health care. Psychiatry, he argues, must integrate scientific and humanistic models by emphasizing the practical, pluralistic, participatory, and provisional aspects of clinical diagnosis and treatment. Psychiatrists need to have the skill and flexibility to use scientific and humanistic approaches in a collaborative, open-ended clinical process; they must recognize the complexity of human suffering even as they strive for scientific rigor. This is the only way, he writes, that psychiatry can heal its conceptual rift and the emotional wounds of its patients.

Bridging The Gap Integrative Oncology And The Practice Of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Free Download Bridging The Gap: Integrative Oncology And The Practice Of Traditional Chinese Medicine
English | 2021 | ISBN: 9811204020 | 300 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 33 MB
The book’s inherent value, currently, is in its uniqueness. There are few books on Integrative Oncology (IO). There are few books on the entirety of traditional Chinese medicine in the treatment of cancer. There are even fewer, if any, books that deal with the topics of Integrative Oncology and the use of traditional Chinese medicine as a whole in the treatment of people with cancer. While very broad and deep topics, this makes for a varied audience of interest that includes not just the TCM practitioner or student, but Western health practitioners and patients as well as laypeople interested in the topic of oncology. For those interested in the topic of IO, it gives one of the few non-biased, honest and critical views of the state of IO in contrast to what is promoted by various institutions and societies. For the Western health practitioner and/or patient, many of whom are completely unfamiliar with TCM and how it works or can be used, it provides information on the breadth of TCM and how it can be applied in various ways to help improve outcomes. For the TCM practitioner or student, it provides much needed information on how to go about caring for a patient with cancer to include clinical pearls and important Western medical information and terminology.

Authors: Bill Kousoulas PhD, Jacqueline Kousoulas | Narrator: Michael Hacker
Trauma manifests in myriad ways….
On December 15, 1967, trauma erupted in West Virginia as the small river town of Point Pleasant had just experienced the deadliest bridge collapse in US history. Early that evening, lives in the Ohio River Valley were forever altered as the Silver Bridge connecting Point Pleasant to Kanauga, Ohio collapsed into the icy river below. One hundred and fifty American Red Cross volunteers worked feverishly overnight to rescue people and debris from the frigid waters, while friends provided comfort to the weary and hopeful with missing friends and family members. Concerned others supplied food and fire to nourish and warm the workers. "Efforts to dredge the waters of the Ohio River were hampered by the murkiness of the winter’s waters, as well as the deep, persistent cold of the December air." (Bolte, 2010)

Conservation of Contemporary Art Bridging the Gap Between Theory and Practice

Free Download Conservation of Contemporary Art: Bridging the Gap Between Theory and Practice
English | 2024 | ISBN: 3031423569 | 401 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 25 MB
This open access book investigates whether and how theoretical findings and insights in contemporary art conservation can be translated into the daily work practices of conservators or, vice versa, whether and how the problems and dilemmas encountered in conservation practice can inform broader research questions and projects. For several decades now, the conservation of contemporary art has been a dynamic field of research and reflection. Because of contemporary art’s variable constitution, its care and management calls for a fundamental rethinking of the overall research landscape of museums, heritage institutions, private-sector organizations and universities. At first, this research was primarily pursued by conservation professionals working in or with museums and other heritage organizations, but increasingly academic researchers and universities became involved, for instance through collaborative projects. This book is the result of such collaboration. It sets out to bridge the "gap" between theory and practice by investigating conservation practices as a form of reflection and reflection as a form of practice.

Diversity Education in the MENA Region Bridging the Gaps in Language Learning

Free Download Diversity Education in the MENA Region: Bridging the Gaps in Language Learning by Hassan Abouabdelkader, Barry Tomalin
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2023 | 389 Pages | ISBN : 3031426924 | 11.7 MB
This book outlines a landscape of diversity education in the MENA region and its repercussions on learners’ abilities, outcomes, and prospects. It addresses the concerns of language educators, curriculum designers, language education researchers, students and trainers. Theoretically, the issues of diversity, inclusion and equity share common principles and insights; yet they are not conceived of in this book as interchangeable. These subtle distinctions, as delineated in this book, show that they are complementary and include the principles of quality education which leverage human rights, sustainability and promotion of the human capital. What makes this book distinctive is that it reconsiders the existing pedagogical trends in terms of the current social upheavals, and with reference to the principles of development and progress needed in twenty-first century education.
