Murky waters British spas in eighteenth-century medicine and literature

Free Download Sophie Vasset, "Murky waters: British spas in eighteenth-century medicine and literature "
English | ISBN: 1526159716 | 2022 | 304 pages | PDF | 12 MB
Murky waters challenges the refined image of spa towns in eighteenth-century Britain by unveiling darker and more ambivalent contemporary representations. It reasserts the centrality of health in British spas by looking at disease, the representation of treatment and the social networks of care woven into spa towns. The book explores the great variety of medical and literary discourses on the numerous British spas in the long eighteenth century and offers a rare look at spas beyond Bath. Following the thread of ‘murkiness’, it explores the underwater culture of spas, from the gender fluidity of users to the local and national political dimensions, as well as the financial risks taken by gamblers and investors. It thus brings a fresh look at mineral waters and a pinch of salt to health-related discourses.

London presbyterians and the British revolutions, 1638-64

Free Download Elliot Vernon, "London presbyterians and the British revolutions, 1638-64 "
English | ISBN: 1526157802 | 2021 | 344 pages | PDF | 5 MB
This is the first book-length exploration of presbyterians and presbyterianism in London during the crisis period of the mid-seventeenth century. It charts the emergence of a movement of clergy and laity that aimed at ‘reforming the Reformation’ by instituting presbyterianism in London’s parishes and ultimately the Church of England. The book analyses the movement’s political narrative and its relationship with its patrons in the parliamentarian aristocracy and gentry. It also considers the political and social institutions of London life and examines the presbyterians’ opponents within the parliamentarian camp. Finally, it focuses on the intellectual influence of presbyterian ideas on the political thought and polity of the Church and the emergence of dissent at the Restoration.

Gordon Stretton, Black British Transoceanic Jazz Pioneer A New Jazz Chronicle

Free Download Michael Brocken, "Gordon Stretton, Black British Transoceanic Jazz Pioneer: A New Jazz Chronicle"
English | ISBN: 1498574467 | 2018 | 352 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
This extensively researched text concerning the life and career of Liverpool-born Black jazz musician Gordon Stretton not only contributes to the important debate concerning the transoceanic pathways of jazz during the 20th century, but also suggests to the jazz fan and scholar alike that such pathways, reaching as they also did across the Atlantic from Europe, are actually part of a largely ignored therefore partially-hidden history of 20th century jazz performance, industry and influence. The work also exists to contribute to a more complete picture of the significance of diaspora studies across the spectrum of popular music performance, and to award to those Liverpool musicians who were not contributors to the city’s musical visage post-rock ‘n’ roll, a place in popular music history.

Exiting war The British Empire and the 1918-20 moment

Free Download Romain Fathi, "Exiting war: The British Empire and the 1918-20 moment "
English | ISBN: 1526155842 | 2022 | 232 pages | PDF | 3 MB
Exiting war explores a particular 1918-20 ‘moment’ in the British Empire’s history, between the First World War’s armistices of 1918, and the peace treaties of 1919 and 1920. That moment, we argue, was a challenging and transformative time for the Empire. While British authorities successfully answered some of the post-war tests they faced, such as demobilisation, repatriation, and fighting the widespread effects of the Spanish flu, the racial, social, political and economic hallmarks of their imperialism set the scene for a wide range of expressions of loyalties and disloyalties, and anticolonial movements. The book documents and conceptualises this 1918-20 ‘moment’ and its characteristics as a crucial three-year period of transformation for and within the Empire, examining these years for the significant shifts in the imperial relationship that occurred and as laying the foundation for later change in the imperial system.

Elizabethan and Jacobean Reappropriation in Contemporary British Drama ‘Upstart Crows’ (2024)

Free Download Graham Saunders, "Elizabethan and Jacobean Reappropriation in Contemporary British Drama: ‘Upstart Crows’"
English | 2017 | ISBN: 1137444525 | PDF | pages: 200 | 2.4 mb
This book examines British playwrights’ responses to the work of Shakespeare and his contemporaries since 1945, from Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead to Sarah Kane’s Blasted and Jez Butterworth’s Jerusalem. Using the work of Julie Sanders and others working in the fields of Adaptation Studies and intertextual criticism, it argues that this relatively neglected area of drama, widely considered to be adaptation, should instead be considered as appropriation – as work that often mounts challenges to the ideologies and orthodoxies within Elizabethan and Jacobean drama, and questions the legitimacy and cultural authority of Shakespeare’s legacy. The book discusses the work of Howard Barker, Peter Barnes, Edward Bond, Howard Brenton, David Edgar, Elaine Feinstein and the Women’s Theatre Group, David Greig, Sarah Kane, Dennis Kelly, Bernard Kopps, Charles Marowitz, Julia Pascal and Arnold Wesker.
