Democratic passions The politics of feeling in British popular radicalism, 1809-48

English | ISBN: 1526137046 | 2022 | 272 pages | PDF | 25 MB
This book challenges the assumption – just as alive today as it was in the nineteenth century – that the political sphere was an arena of reason in which feelings had no part to play. It shows that feelings were a central, albeit contested, aspect of the political culture of the period. Radical leaders were accused of inflaming the passions; the state and its propertied supporters were charged with callousness; radicals grounded their claims to citizenship in the universalist assumption that workers had the same capacity for feeling as their social betters (denied at this time). It sheds new light on the relationship between protest movements and the state by showing how one of the central issues at stake in the conflict between radicals and their oppressors was the feelings of the propertied classes.

British Leyland The Cars, 1968-1986 (2024)

Free Download James Taylor, "British Leyland: The Cars, 1968-1986"
English | 2018 | ISBN: 1785003917 | EPUB | pages: 192 | 121.4 mb
In 1968, British Leyland brought together most of Britain’s motor manufacturers, with the intention of creating a robust unified group that could equal the strength of the big European conglomerates. But this was not to be. There have been many books about the politics and the business activities of British Leyland, but British Leyland – The Cars, 1968 – 1986 looks deliberately at the cars that came from the company. The eighteen years of the corporation’s existence saw a confusing multitude of different car types, but this book resolves these confusions, clarifying who built what, and when. The book takes 1986 as its cut-off because this was the year that the old British Leyland ceased to exist and what was left of the car and light commercial business was renamed the Rover Group. Topics covered include the production histories and technical specifications of every major model; special overseas models; appendices on engines, code names and factories and finally, classic buying guidacne is given on the models built in Britain.

This volume re-examines traditional interpretations of the rise of modern aesthetics in eighteenth-century Britain and Germany. The British Pacific Fleet The Royal Navy’s Most Powerful Strike Force (2024)

Free Download David Hobbs, "The British Pacific Fleet: The Royal Navy’s Most Powerful Strike Force"
English | 2011 | pages: 480 | ISBN: 1848320485 | EPUB | 103,0 mb
August 1944 the British Pacific Fleet did not exist. Six months later it was strong enough to launch air attacks on Japanese territory, and by the end of the war it constituted the most powerful force in the history of the Royal Navy, fighting as professional equals alongside the US Navy in the thick of the action. How this was achieved by a nation nearing exhaustion after five years of conflict is a story of epic proportions in which ingenuity, diplomacy and dogged persistence all played a part. As much a political as a technical triumph, the BPF was uniquely complex in its make-up: its C-in-C was responsible to the Admiralty for the general direction of his Fleet; took operational orders from the American Admiral Nimitz; answered to the Government of Australia for the construction and maintenance of a vast base infrastructure, and to other Commonwealth Governments for the ships and men that formed his fully-integrated multi-national fleet. This ground-breaking new work by David Hobbs describes the background, creation and expansion of the BPF from its first tentative strikes, through operations off the coast of Japan to its impact on the immediate post-war period, including the opinions of USN liaison officers attached to the British flagships. The book is the first to demonstrate the real scope and scale of the BPF s impressive achievement.
