The Day Peace Broke Out The VE-Day Experience

When peace finally returned to Europe in 1945, the perceptions of how victory over Nazism was to be celebrated and what post-war Britain should look like were very different from the visions the people and the politicians had in 1940. Mike Brown examines the milestone events that led to the nation’s progressive change of heart from paranoia and defeatism in the early years of the war, to the growing confidence that followed El Alamein in 1942. With this watershed in Britain’s fortunes, the nation began to look towards certain victory and the shape of the postwar world. VE-Day itself is described in detail: how people celebrated all over Britain, Churchill’s speech, the King’s speech and the ethical problems of celebrating victory in Europe while fighting was still going on in the Far East, and of those who had nothing to celebrate owing to personal loss of a loved one. Following a look at the immediate post-VE-Day period up to (and including) the VJ-Day celebrations in August, the author concludes with the harsh realization of post-world war austerity and the increasing disillusionment that led many to conclude that they had won the war but lost the peace.

Free Download Jean-Pierre Brun, "Going for Broke: Insolvency Tools to Support Cross-Border Asset Recovery in Corruption Cases "
English | ISBN: 1464814384 | 2019 | 146 pages | PDF | 4 MB
Going for Broke focuses on insolvency as an additional civil remedy in the arsenal of asset recovery practitioners, specifically in the context of grand corruption investigations and proceedings. The recovery of corruption proceeds is often sought through criminal prosecution and confiscation or civil lawsuits. Insolvency proceedings can also be an effective mechanism in the right circumstances, with their own advantages and disadvantages. The scenario that is most likely to benefit from this type of remedy is one in which bribes and stolen funds have been routed through special-purpose companies. This guidebook is intended as a practical tool to help policy makers, public officials, and those who have been entrusted with recovering their nations’ stolen assets. It informs them about the ways that insolvency can be used to pursue proceeds of corruption. It may also serve as a quick reference for other practitioners: insolvency professionals, auditors, financial institutions, in-house counsel, and other professionals who deal with corruption.

Author: John Ganz
Narrator: Eric Jason Martin

A lively, revelatory look back at the convulsions at the end of the Reagan era-and their dark legacy today. With the Soviet Union extinct, Saddam Hussein defeated, and U.S. power at its zenith, the early 1990s promised a "kinder, gentler America." Instead, it was a period of rising anger and domestic turmoil, anticipating the polarization and resurgent extremism we know today. In When the Clock Broke, the acclaimed political writer John Ganz tells the story of America’s late-century discontents. Ranging from upheavals in Crown Heights and Los Angeles to the advent of David Duke and the heartland survivalists, the broadcasts of Rush Limbaugh, and the bitter disputes between neoconservatives and the "paleo-con" right, Ganz immerses us in a time when what Philip Roth called the "indigenous American berserk" took new and ever-wilder forms. In the 1992 campaign, Pat Buchanan’s and Ross Perot’s insurgent populist bids upended the political establishment, all while Americans struggled through recession, alarm about racial and social change, the specter of a new power in Asia, and the end of Cold War-era political norms. Conspiracy theories surged, and intellectuals and activists strove to understand the "Middle American Radicals" whose alienation fueled new causes. Meanwhile, Bill Clinton appeared to forge a new, vital center, though it would not hold for long. In a rollicking, eye-opening book, Ganz narrates the fall of the Reagan order and the rise of a new and more turbulent America.

For years, these businesses could get away with progressive virtual signaling without worrying about alienating customers. Then the anti-woke counter-offensive movement arrived. As high-profile, disastrous backlashes at companies like Anheuser-Busch, Disney, Target and other companies reveal, companies who cave to the demands of left-wing social justice activists are being punished like never before.
