The Marx Brothers’ films are packed with slapstick and obvious jokes, gags, puns, pratfalls, and mimicry. But beneath the laughs is a serious and biting condemnation of American culture. This book examines historical events, political practices, economic conditions, manners and customs, literary subjects, and popular entertainment as satirized in the films and considers the ways in which the films were relevant in their era and remain so today.

English | ISBN: 0750962941 | 2015 | 240 pages | EPUB | 4 MB
Frank and Percy Talley, Troopers 2365 and 2366, of the 1st City of London Yeomanry (Rough Riders), were destined to leave England to take part in the last, and most costly, single-day battle of the Gallipoli Campaign, on August 21, 1915. In 200-plus never-before-published letters, the Talley brothers describe their training in England, their move to the East coast to man the trenches there during the invasion scare of 1914, and the zeppelin attack at Great Yarmouth. They describe the activities of the Rough Riders in preparing for war, of their transportation to Egypt and Suez, and of their expectation that they would be used in action at Gallipoli. After walking into a maelstrom of fire on August 21, 1915, the trooper-brothers were separated, and each wrote home not knowing whether the other had survived. Both were wounded. Their letters from the Suvla trenches are brief but telling-flies, snipers, the stench of the dead.

Imperial Vanities The Adventures of the Baker Brothers and Gordon of Khartoum

Free Download Imperial Vanities: The Adventures of the Baker Brothers and Gordon of Khartoum by Brian Thompson
English | January 1, 2003 | ISBN: 0006532217 | 312 pages | PDF | 3.57 Mb
‘A Victorian drama of three intertwined lives set against a backcloth of the greatest empire the world has ever seen. By degrees heroic, poignant, whimsical and tragic, Brian Thompson’s wonderful book is precisely what that much-misused cliché "rattling good yarn" might have been coined to describe.’ RICHARD HOLMES ‘Victorian Britain, that seemingly most conformist of ages, was in fact teeming with eccentrics. The fabulous Baker Brothers were eccentric in a conformist way for the Sir Samuel searched for the source of the Nile; Baker Pasha became leader of the Ottoman army. But it was that epitome of empire, and epitome of the Christian English gentleman, who was the most peculiar of them ‘Chinese’ Gordon is finally depicted as the anarchist he really was as he marched to his death against the Mahdi. It is Thompson’s triumph that he gives these characters, straitjacketed first by their time, and then by history, the freedom to dance across the page once more.’ JUDITH FLANDERS Imperial Vanities is an adventure story in the high tradition, ranging from the Upper Nile, to Ceylon, Egypt and the slave markets of the Balkans. Livingstone, Speke and Burton also make an appearance, with the shadowy and elusive Laurence Oliphant spying from the sidelines. Written with Thompson’s masterly touch, this is history at its best. ‘A tale of Empire at its most eccentric. Part biography, part history, part adventure yarn, Imperial Vanities is an ingeniously enjoyable read.’ Fergus Fleming

The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm The Complete First Edition

Free Download The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm: The Complete First Edition by Jacob Grimm, Wilhelm Grimm, Jack Zipes – translator/editor
English | December 23, 2014 | ISBN: B00R6IRFG6 | 19 hours and 14 minutes | M4B 64 Kbps | 370 Mb
When Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm published their Children’s and Household Tales in 1812, followed by a second volume in 1815, they had no idea that such stories as "Rapunzel", "Hansel and Gretel", and "Cinderella" would become the most celebrated in the world. Yet few people today are familiar with the majority of tales from the two early volumes, since in the next four decades the Grimms would publish six other editions, each extensively revised in content and style. For the very first time, The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm makes available in English all 156 stories from the 1812 and 1815 editions. These narrative gems, are newly translated and brought together in one beautiful audiobook. From "The Frog King" to "The Golden Key", wondrous worlds unfold – heroes and heroines are rewarded, weaker animals triumph over the strong, and simple bumpkins prove themselves not so simple after all. Esteemed fairy tale scholar Jack Zipes offers accessible translations that retain the spare description and engaging storytelling style of the originals. Indeed, this is what makes the tales from the 1812 and 1815 editions unique – they reflect diverse voices, rooted in oral traditions, that are absent from the Grimms’ later, more embellished collections of tales. Zipes’ introduction gives important historical context, and the book includes the Grimms’ prefaces and notes. A delight to read, The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm presents these peerless stories to a whole new generation of readers.

The sound. The suits. The sunglasses. The Blues Brothers have firmly cemented their place as pop-culture icons in the annals of entertainment history. But how did a band that debuted as a goofy sketch on Saturday Night Live in 1976 go on to have a hit movie and a number one record in the space of just four short years? Simple. They were "on a mission from God".
Now, nearly 50 years later, Elwood Blues (aka Dan Aykroyd) is on another mission-to tell the full story of how two young actors went from blues lovers to Blues Brothers. In this fascinating audio documentary Aykroyd "gets the band back together", taking listeners on a road trip through time-from late nights in the early days with John Belushi at Dan’s speakeasy in Toronto, to working with blues legends Aretha Franklin, James Brown, and Ray Charles on The Blues Brothers movie, through the founding of House of Blues, the Blues Brothers 2000 sequel, and beyond.
