Topological spaces in general, and the real numbers in particular, have the characteristic of exhibiting a ‘continuity structure’, one that can be examined from the vantage point of Baire category or of Lebesgue measure. Though they are in some sense dual, work over the last half-century has shown that it is the former, topological view, that has pride of place since it reveals a much richer structure that draws from, and gives back to, areas such as analytic sets, infinite games, probability, infinite combinatorics, descriptive set theory and topology. Keeping prerequisites to a minimum, the authors provide a new exposition and synthesis of the extensive mathematical theory needed to understand the subject’s current state of knowledge, and they complement their presentation with a thorough bibliography of source material and pointers to further work. The result is a book that will be the standard reference for all researchers in the area.

Abelian Model Category Theory

English | 2025 | ISBN: 100944946X | 439 Pages | PDF | 4 MB
Offering a unique resource for advanced graduate students and researchers, this book treats the fundamentals of Quillen model structures on abelian and exact categories. Building the subject from the ground up using cotorsion pairs, it develops the special properties enjoyed by the homotopy category of such abelian model structures. A central result is that the homotopy category of any abelian model structure is triangulated and characterized by a suitable universal property – it is the triangulated localization with respect to the class of trivial objects. The book also treats derived functors and monoidal model categories from this perspective, showing how to construct tensor triangulated categories from cotorsion pairs. For researchers and graduate students in algebra, topology, representation theory, and category theory, this book offers clear explanations of difficult model category methods that are increasingly being used in contemporary research.

Superstorms, hurricanes, typhoons, and spiraling freak weather: the fallout of global warming is a real-life natural thriller, as captured in Porter Fox’s urgent and stunning story of chasing the world’s most devastating storms. Here is the story of the largest storms on earth and how those storms are growing bigger and stronger. The tale of extreme weather doesn’t begin with floods, fires, or even the air that carries this change to our lives. It begins with the ocean. Oceans create weather, climate, floods, droughts, and most of the geophysical fallout of global warming. Exactly how, award-winning writer Porter Fox contends, depends on invisible ocean currents, planetary cycles just now being defined, and processes in the deep ocean that may well have already saved us from the worst effects of the climate crisis. In an attempt to avert a coming age of superstorms, sea level rise, and catastrophic warming, scientists followed the lead of a college drop-out-turned-maverick sailor and storm-chaser; a Romanian refugee turned BBC radio host turned circumnavigating mapmaker; and an audacious new attempt to study storms above as well as deep below the ocean depths, using drones. Throughout Category Five, Fox shadows these explorers, scientists, oceanographers, and weather forecasters in an attempt to understand, forestall, and possibly harness the awesome power of our oceans.

Religion as a Category of Governance and Sovereignty

English | 2015 | ISBN: 9004290559 | PDF | pages: 338 | 1.9 mb
Religious-secular distinctions have been crucial to the way in which modern governments have rationalised their governance and marked out their sovereignty – as crucial as the territorial boundaries that they have drawn around nations. The authors of this volume provide a multi-dimensional picture of how the category of religion has served the ends of modern government. They draw on perspectives from history, anthropology, moral philosophy, theology and religious studies, as well as empirical analysis of India, Japan, Mexico, the United States, Israel-Palestine, France and the United Kingdom.
