How much authority do they possess and how is that authority exercised?

The Federal Reserve System, which has been Congress’s agent for the control of money since 1913, has a mixed reputation. Its errors have been huge. It was the principal cause of the Great Depression of the 1930s and the inflation of the 1970s, and participated in the massive bailouts of financial institutions at taxpayers’ expense during the recent Great Recession.

Policy Reforms and Agriculture Development in Central Asia

Free Download Policy Reforms and Agriculture Development in Central Asia By Suresh Chandra Babu, Debdatta Sengupta (auth.), Suresh Chandra Babu, Sandjar Djalalov (eds.)
2006 | 494 Pages | ISBN: 0387297774 | PDF | 6 MB
The Central Asian republics – Kazakhstan, the Krygyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan – are transitioning from centrally planned economies to market-oriented systems. This volume addresses the process and policy reforms these countries face and how the reforms may impact agricultural development in a region that has experienced varying degrees of economic growth over the fifteen years since independence. It offers expert policy research and analysis and provides research-based information for generating policy recommendations that are relevant to each country as well as similar evidence from other transitional economies, including China, Vietnam, and selected Eastern European countries.Suresh Chandra Babu is a Senior Research Fellow and Program Leader at the International Food Research Policy Institute (IFRPI), in Washington, D.C. where he coordinates its research and outreach programs in Central Asia. He has trained more than 1,000 policy analysts and has consulted with international organizations such as the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, and UNICEF. Dr. Babu received his Ph.D. in economics from Iowa State University in the United States.Sandjar Djalalov is a principal researcher at the Center for Efficient Economic Policy in Uzbekistan where he conducts research on production, marketing, investment, and consumption behavior of different types of farms in Uzbekistan and Central Asia. He is also a senior lecturer in the Tashkent Institute of Engineering for Irrigation and Agricultural Mechanization. Dr. Djalalov received his Ph.D. from the Institute of Macroeconomics and Social Investigation in Tashkent in Uzbekistan.

Free Download Tumors of the Central Nervous System, Volume 8: Astrocytoma, Medulloblastoma, Retinoblastoma, Chordoma, Craniopharyngioma, Oligodendroglioma, and Ependymoma By Tomohiro Osanai M.D., Chisato Katoh M.D., Ken Okumura M.D. (auth.), M.A. Hayat (eds.)
2012 | 338 Pages | ISBN: 9400742126 | PDF | 7 MB
With tens of thousands of new CNS tumor cases each year in the US alone, this series of publications is a valuable aid to the diagnosis and treatment of these problematic neoplasms. Now, the eighth in the set returns to the topic of brain tumors, dealing with seven distinct types: astrocytoma, medulloblastoma, retinoblastoma, chordoma, craniopharyngioma, oligodendroglioma, and ependymoma. After updating the classification of medulloblastoma the volume provides an overview of ependymoma as well as describing the delineation of prognosis based on the genetic aberrations of the latter patients. The material offers key insights into the molecular pathways involved in tumor biology, such as the role of E-cadherin gene instability, carbonic anhydrase II, urokinase plasminogen activator, and Wnt signaling in meningioma. Contributors explain the genetic and clinical features associated with recurring meningioma, including the role played by erythropoietin receptor, and examine the way in which OTX2 transcription factor functions as an oncogene in medulloblastoma. With much more besides, including discussion of the molecular mechanisms that result in resistance to chemotherapy in medulloblastoma, this volume and its companions have a positive role to play in inspiring a new generation of researchers to design new drugs that are better targeted-and thus more effective.

Central Nervous System Metastasis, the Biological Basis and Clinical Considerations

Free Download Central Nervous System Metastasis, the Biological Basis and Clinical Considerations By Diane Palmieri Ph.D. (auth.), Diane Palmieri (eds.)
2012 | 228 Pages | ISBN: 9400752903 | PDF | 4 MB
This volume will cover what is known regarding the biology and treatment of CNS metastasis, including novel chapters such as the future of targeted therapies. It will begin with an overview of the natural history and risk factors for CNS metastases that will broadly cover all cancer histologies. This will be followed by 3 chapters that will cover the biology. These include: molecular biology, discussing what is known about specific genes/proteins involved in the process and model systems to study brain metastasis; the brain microenvironment, focusing on how it is different from the microenvironment of other organs of the body; and the blood-brain barrier, which includes a discussion of permeability with respect to brain metastases. A chapter on experimental imaging will cover both the biology of brain metastasis from an imaging perspective and use of imaging techniques to study brain metastases. The clinical chapters will discuss treatment options with separate chapters on surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. In addition, leptomeningeal metastasis will be given its own chapter. Finally, quality of life issues will be the concluding chapter.
