English | ISBN: 946236110X | 2014 | 152 pages | PDF | 7 MB
Europe is increasingly being plagued by itinerant crime groups, a trend also known as ‘mobile banditry.’ Even though the phenomenon of mobile banditry has existed in Europe for centuries, in recent years great concern has risen about the increase in the number of gangs from East and Central Europe who have been committing various types of crimes in West European countries. This book provides an explanation and analysis of the historical, political, economic, and cultural backgrounds of the phenomenon ‘itinerant criminal gangs’ from the following perspectives: a) the lessons learned from comparable situations in the past; b) the inevitable negative effects of globalization; c) the power of attraction of the West; and d) the gulf between the rich and poor and between West and East Europe. An analysis of the connections between organized crime, shady entrepreneurs, and corrupt politicians in East and Central Europe on the one hand, and the relationship between migrants and criminal groups in the Netherlands on the other, provide an explanation on the dynamics of the markets in stolen goods. Based on 127 interviews and observations in the Netherlands, Poland, Lithuania, Bulgaria, and Romania, as well as an analysis of court files and literature, the research looks at the socio-cultural background of these criminals, how they operate, what happens to the stolen goods, and the efforts that the Dutch, Eastern/Central European states, and the European Union have initiated to combat this form of organized crime.

Free Download Aziza Shanazarova, "Female Religiosity in Central Asia: Sufi Leaders in the Persianate World "
English | ISBN: 1009386344 | 2024 | 196 pages | PDF | 4 MB
Through revealing the fascinating story of the Sufi master Aghā-yi Buzurg and her path to becoming the ‘Great Lady’ in sixteenth-century Bukhara, Aziza Shanazarova invites readers into the little-known world of female religious authority in early modern Islamic Central Asia, revealing a far more multifaceted gender history than previously supposed. Pointing towards new ways of mapping female religious authority onto the landscapes of early modern Muslim narratives, this book serves as an intervention into the debate on the history of women and religion that views gender as a historical phenomenon and construct, challenging narratives of the relationship between gender and age in Islamic discourse of the period. Shanazarova draws on previously unknown primary sources to bring attention to a rich world of female religiosity involving communal leadership, competition for spiritual superiority, and negotiation with the political elite that transforms our understanding of women’s history in early modern Central Asia.

English | ISBN: 1032572051 | 2024 | 440 pages | PDF | 4 MB
The term "crisis," with its complex history, has emerged as one of the pivotal notions of political modernity. As such, reconstructing the ways the discourse of crisis functioned in various contexts and historical moments gives us a unique insight not only into a series of conceptual transformations, but also into the underlying logic of key political and intellectual controversies of the last two centuries. Studying the ways crisis was experienced, conceptualized, and negotiated can contribute to the understanding of how various visions of time and history shape political thinking and, conversely, how political and social reconfigurations frame our assumptions about temporality and spatiality.

The general trend in Afghanistan is clear-cut: the overall security situation has consistently deteriorated since 2009, worsening dramatically since 2014. However, in the provinces of Afghanistan adjacent to Central Asia, the security situation has deteriorated even further than in Afghanistan as a whole. This report considers the range of options available to the Central Asian neighbors of Afghanistan (Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan) in responding to this growing threat, both unilaterally and in their bilateral engagement with actors in Afghanistan. Furthermore, it considers how decision making processes in Central Asia will be affected by future developments in Afghanistan by assessing options and likely outcomes under a set of security scenarios in Afghanistan itself.
