Free Download Sabrina P. Ramet, "Alternatives to Democracy in Twentieth-Century Europe: Collectivist Visions of Modernity"
English | ISBN: 9633863090 | 2019 | 492 pages | PDF | 11 MB
Alternatives to Democracy in Twentieth-Century Europe examines the historical examples of Soviet Communism, Italian Fascism, German Nazism, and Spanish Anarchism, suggesting that, in spite of their differences, they had some key features in common, in particular their shared hostility to individualism, representative government, laissez faire capitalism, and the decadence they associated with modern culture. But rather than seeking to return to earlier ways of working these movements and regimes sought to design a new future – an alternative future – that would restore the nation to spiritual and political health. The Fascists, for their part, specifically promoted palingenesis, which is to say the spiritual rebirth of the nation.

Writing the Environment in Nineteenth-Century American Literature The Ecological Awareness of Early Scribes of Nature

Free Download Steven Petersheim, "Writing the Environment in Nineteenth-Century American Literature: The Ecological Awareness of Early Scribes of Nature "
English | ISBN: 1498508375 | 2015 | 254 pages | EPUB | 12 MB
The nineteenth-century roots of environmental writing in American literature are often mentioned in passing and sometimes studied piece by piece. Writing the Environment in Nineteenth-Century American Literature: The Ecological Awareness of Early Scribes of Nature brings together numerous explorations of environmentally-aware writing across the genres of nineteenth-century literature. Like Lawrence Buell, the authors of this collection find Thoreau’s writing a touchstone of nineteenth-century environmental writing, particularly focusing on Thoreau’s claim that humans may function as "scribes of nature." However, these studies of Thoreau’s antecedents, contemporaries, and successors also reveal a range of other writers in the nineteenth century whose literary treatments of nature are often more environmentally attuned than most readers have noticed.

The U-boat Century German Submarine Warfare 1906-2006 (2024)

Free Download Jak Mallmann Showell – The U-boat Century: German Submarine Warfare 1906-2006
Chatham Publishing | 2006 | ISBN: 1861762410 | English | 256 pages | PDF | 154.71 MB
On a sweltering day in August 1906 U-1, or Unterseeboot 1, meaning underwater boat, was lifted into Kiel s waters for trials; 100 hundred years later Kiel still witnesses the launching of U-boats, modern submarines with fuel cell propulsion systems, built for navies worldwide. In the years in between Germany fought two world wars, in which the U-boat almost defeated the Allies. The U-boat was one of the most potent weapons of the 20th century, and here Mallmann Showell, perhaps the world s leading U-boat historian, explains how it was developed and designed and then deployed to wreak havoc in European waters and further afield in the Atlantic and the Far East. This is not a dry technical book but a work that looks behind the scenes at the men who built and fought in them. Weapons systems, operational areas, bases, builders and fleet organisation are covered, and as well as dealing with the world wars, the author brings the story up to date with the third, latest, generation of U-boats. The text is augmented by over 300 images, many never published before. This new work sheds broad and fascinating new insights into the development of the U-boat and will be an essential addition to the library of every modern naval historian and enthusiast.

Radical Legacies Twentieth-Century Public Intellectuals in the United States

Free Download Arthur Redding, "Radical Legacies: Twentieth-Century Public Intellectuals in the United States"
English | ISBN: 1498512682 | 2017 | 172 pages | EPUB | 1390 KB
What use is thinking? This study addresses the ways in which modern American thinkers have intervened in the public sphere and attempted to mediate relations between social and political institutions and cultural and intellectual production. Chapters on both well-known (Henry Adams, Langston Hughes, C. Wright Mills, Angela Davis) and neglected (Randolph Bourne, Mary McCarthy, Paul Goodman) public intellectuals considers how these figures have address a range of problems, including the dangers and difficulty of critical dissent thought during wartime, the contemporary crisis of the humanities under neoliberalism, the legacy of American anti-intellectualism, academic professionalism, and the perils of consumer culture and popular tastes. This book reviews in as critically sympathetic a manner as possible a select few of the minor and major currents of twentieth-century American radical thinking in order to see where they might take us, and how they inflect our current social and intellectual predicaments. Arguing that any "use-value" theory of intellectual production is limiting, Radical Legacies endeavors to maintain and expand a space and reassert an argument for the importance of sustained critical reflection on our collective dilemmas today. It assesses a practice of thought that is engaged, committed, involved, and timely, without being necessarily "practical" or even useful.

Nineteenth Century America in the Society of States

Free Download Cornelia Navari, "Nineteenth Century America in the Society of States "
English | ISBN: 1032370238 | 2023 | 260 pages | PDF | 7 MB
This book examines how the United States adopted and contributed to the practices of international society―the habits and practices states use to regulate their relations―during the nineteenth century. Expert contributors consider America’s "entry" into international society and how independence forced it to enter into diplomatic relations with European states and start a permanent engagement with a society of states. Individual chapters focus on U.S. perceptions of the international order and its place within it, the U.S. position on international issues of that period, and how America’s perceptions and positions affected or were affected by the habits, practices, and institutions of international society. This volume will serve as an invaluable text for undergraduate courses focusing on international relations theory and U.S. foreign policy. It will also appeal to established scholars in international relations, diplomacy, and international history and historical sociology.
