The Inner Chapters are the oldest pieces of the larger collection of writings by several fourth, third, and second century B.C. authors that constitute the classic of Taoism, the Chuang-Tzu (or Zhuangzi). It is this core of ancient writings that is ascribed to Chuang-Tzu himself.

This is the first in a line of four books within the National Geographic Kids Chapters series that tell the true and hilarious stories of animals that love hijinks. In this book you’ll meet three naughty animals, including Fu Manchu, the orangutan escape artist. Fu Manchu lived at the Omaha Zoo and would routinely break out of his habitat to explore the zoo on a nice day. Zookeepers were baffled as to how the ape was escaping, until one day they caught him in the act. Fu Manchu knew how to pick locks. Not only that, he had created his own tool that he used to pick the locks with, which he would store in his mouth so as not to be found out. This and two other charming stories will engage readers and leave them wondering if humans are really the smartest animals.

Selected Chapters in the Calculus of Variations

Free Download Selected Chapters in the Calculus of Variations by Jürgen Moser , Oliver Knill
English | PDF (True) | 2003 | 139 Pages | ISBN : 3764321857 | 9 MB
0.1 Introduction These lecture notes describe a new development in the calculus of variations which is called Aubry-Mather-Theory. The starting point for the theoretical physicist Aubry was a model for the descrip tion of the motion of electrons in a two-dimensional crystal. Aubry investigated a related discrete variational problem and the corresponding minimal solutions. On the other hand, Mather started with a specific class of area-preserving annulus mappings, the so-called monotone twist maps. These maps appear in mechanics as Poincare maps. Such maps were studied by Birkhoff during the 1920s in several papers. In 1982, Mather succeeded to make essential progress in this field and to prove the existence of a class of closed invariant subsets which are now called Mather sets. His existence theorem is based again on a variational principle. Although these two investigations have different motivations, they are closely re lated and have the same mathematical foundation. We will not follow those ap proaches but will make a connection to classical results of Jacobi, Legendre, Weier strass and others from the 19th century. Therefore in Chapter I, we will put together the results of the classical theory which are the most important for us. The notion of extremal fields will be most relevant. In Chapter II we will investigate variational problems on the 2-dimensional torus. We will look at the corresponding global minimals as well as at the relation be tween minimals and extremal fields. In this way, we will be led to Mather sets.

Quantum Mechanics Special Chapters

Free Download Quantum Mechanics: Special Chapters by Walter Greiner
English | PDF | 1998 | 386 Pages | ISBN : 3540600736 | 29.6 MB
Quantum Mechanics – Special Chapters is an important additional course for third-year students. Starting with the quantization of a free electromagnetic field and its interaction with matter, it discusses second quantization and interacting quantum fields. After re-normalization problems and a general treatment of nonrelativistic quantum field theory, these methods are applied to problems from solid-state physics and plasma physics: quantum gas, superfluidity, plasmons, and photons. The book concludes with an introduction to quantum statistics, the structure of atoms and molecules, and the Schrödinger wave equation formulated by Feynman path integrals. 72 fully and carefully worked examples and problems consolidate the material.
