A to Z of Chemists, Updated Edition tells the stories of nearly 100 chemists-both well-known scientific greats of history and contemporary scientists whose work is just verging on greatness. Readers will find fascinating entries on people such as Gertrude Belle Elion, who developed drugs to cure diseases as diverse as leukemia, gout, herpes, malaria, and arthritis. From famous mainstream chemists to minority scientists often excluded from similar titles, A to Z of Chemists, Updated Edition spans all cultures, ethnicities, and eras. Designed for high school through early college students, this title in the Notable Scientists series is also an ideal resource for all readers interested in chemistry. Articulated in everyday language, even the most complex concepts are accessible. While the majority of the scientists in this work are, first and foremost, chemists, there is a handful of physicists, biologists, and other scientists who made significant contributions to chemistry. Mathematics for Chemists

Free Download Mathematics for Chemists by P. G. Francis
English | PDF | 1984 | 203 Pages | ISBN : 9401089507 | 13.4 MB
This text is concerned with those aspects of mathematics that are necessary for first-degree students of chemistry. It is written from the point of view that an element of mathematical rigour is essential for a proper appreciation of the scope and limitations of mathematical methods, and that the connection between physical principles and their mathematical formulation requires at least as much study as the mathematical principles themselves. It is written with chemistry students particularly in mind because that subject provides a point of view that differs in some respects from that of students of other scientific disciplines. Chemists in particular need insight into three dimensional geometry and an appreciation of problems involving many variables. It is also a subject that draws particular benefit from having available two rigorous disciplines, those of mathematics and of thermodynamics. The benefit of rigour is that it provides a degree of certainty which is valuable in a subject of such complexity as is provided by the behaviour of real chemical systems. As an experimen tal science, we attempt in chemistry to understand and to predict behaviour by combining precise experimental measurement with such rigorous theory as may be at the time available; these seldom provide a complete picture but do enable areas of uncertainty to be identified.

2004 | 266 Pages | ISBN: 3642058868 | PDF | 5 MB
Building a successful career in the sciences depends on more than good technical knowledge and research skills. Communication and interpersonal skills, as well as personal traits, are often decisive factors in the level of advancement and satisfaction that can be achieved. But where do scientists, from new graduates to mid-career professionals, go for insights and advice on how to plan, manage or reengineer their careers? Now John Fetzer’s "Career Management for Chemists" provides ample, common-sense guidance on the key topics such as:Resumés and CVs, Staying Driven & Current, Personal Skills & TraitsNetworking, Teamwork & Leadership, Speaking & ListeningWriting Research Papers, Mentoring, Behavior & RewardsInspired by Fetzer’s popular column "Building Professional Careers in Chemistry," which runs monthly in the journal "Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry," the practical coverage reflects not only his long professional experience but also his insight that, especially in today’s changing workplace, strategies and the skills for career management require constant re-evaluation.
