Australia’s Children’s Courts Today and Tomorrow

Free Download Australia’s Children’s Courts Today and Tomorrow By Rosemary Sheehan (auth.), Rosemary Sheehan, Allan Borowski (eds.)
2013 | 216 Pages | ISBN: 9400759274 | PDF | 2 MB
The Children’s Court is one of society’s most important social institutions. At the same time, it is steeped in controversy. This is in large measure due to the persistence and complexity of the problems with which it deals, namely, juvenile crime and child abuse and neglect. Despite the importance of the Children’s Court as a means of holding young people accountable for their anti-social behaviour and parents for the care of their children, it has not been the subject of close study. Certainly it has not been previously studied nationally. This book, an edited collection, is based on the findings of study that spanned the six States and two Territories of Australia. The study sought to examine the current challenges faced by the Children’s Court and to identify desirable and feasible directions for reform in each State and Territory. A further unique feature of this study is that it canvassed the views of judges and magistrates who preside over this court.

Emergency medicine (EM) physicians practicing in the community are often the first providers to care for acutely ill children with medical complexity (CMC) as they arrive to their local emergency departments, which are often outside of major cities and may be in underserved areas. While many of these patients are ultimately transferred to tertiary care facilities at major medical centers such as theirs, EM physicians play a critical role in acutely stabilizing these patients prior to transfer or discharge home. This is despite often not having received specific education in this patient population during their training.

The Acquisition of Creole Languages How Children Surpass their Input

Free Download Dany Adone, "The Acquisition of Creole Languages: How Children Surpass their Input"
English | 2012 | ISBN: 1107499852, 0521199654 | PDF | pages: 245 | 1.9 mb
How do children acquire a Creole as their first language? This relatively underexplored question is the starting point for this first book of its kind; it also asks how first language acquisition of a Creole differs from that of a non-Creole language. Dany Adone reveals that in the absence of a conventional language model, Creole children acquire language and go beyond the input they receive. This study discusses the role of input, a hotly debated issue in the field of first language acquisition, and provides support for the nativist approach in the debate between nativism and input-based models. The Acquisition of Creole Languages will be essential reading for those in the fields of first language acquisition and Creole studies. Adone takes an interdisciplinary approach, using insights from non-verbal language acquisition, which makes this of great interest to those in the field of sign linguistics.

Sexual Violence Against Children in Britain Since 1965 Trailing Abuse

Free Download Nick Basannavar, "Sexual Violence Against Children in Britain Since 1965: Trailing Abuse "
English | ISBN: 3030831477 | 2021 | 344 pages | PDF | 5 MB
This book investigates the changes and continuities in the ways in which sexual violence has been interpreted and represented in Britain since 1965. It explores the representational trail of the Moors murders and subsequent trial of 1966, the emergence of age of consent abolitionism in the 1970s, Cleveland’s child sexual abuse crisis of 1987-8, and 2010 and 20s contemplations on the Jimmy Savile scandal. Harnessing research into popular media forms and a huge range of personal, political and professional records, Nick Basannavar carefully parses and illustrates the ways in which journalists, medical workers, politicians, lobbyists and other groups assembled and animated their narratives, revealing complex rhetorical and emotional processes. This book challenges problematic conceptual dichotomies such as silence/noise or ignorance/knowledge. It shows instead that although categories such as ‘child sexual abuse’ and ‘paedophilia’ may be relatively recent linguistic value-constructs, sexual violence against children has existed and been represented across historical moments, in changeable and challenging ways.
