English | ISBN: 1609383958 | 2016 | 240 pages | EPUB, PDF | 1474 KB + 2 MB
In 2010, while editing a report on the effects of climate change in Iowa, ecologist Cornelia Mutel came to grips with the magnitude and urgency of the problem. She already knew the basics: greenhouse gas emissions and global average temperatures are rising on a trajectory that could, within decades, propel us beyond far-reaching, irreversible atmospheric changes; the results could devastate the environment that enables humans to thrive. The more details she learned, the more she felt compelled to address this emerging crisis. The result is this book, an artful weaving together of the science behind rising temperatures, tumultuous weather events, and a lifetime devoted to the natural world. Climate change isn’t just about melting Arctic ice and starving polar bears. It’s weakening the web of life in our own backyards.

Blood on the River A Chronicle of Mutiny and Freedom on the Wild Coast

2020 | 336 Pages | ISBN: 1620974592 | EPUB | 17 MB
A breathtakingly original work of history that uncovers a massive enslaved persons’ revolt that almost changed the face of the AmericasOn Sunday, February 27, 1763, thousands of slaves in the Dutch colony of Berbice-in present-day Guyana-launched a massive rebellion which came amazingly close to succeeding. Surrounded by jungle and savannah, the revolutionaries (many of them African-born) and Europeans struck and parried for an entire year. In the end, the Dutch prevailed because of one unique advantage-their ability to get soldiers and supplies from neighboring colonies and from Europe. Blood on the River is the explosive story of this little-known revolution, one that almost changed the face of the Americas.Drawing on nine hundred interrogation transcripts collected by the Dutch when the Berbice rebellion finally collapsed, and which were subsequently buried in Dutch archives, historian Marjoleine Kars reconstructs an extraordinarily rich day-by-day account of this pivotal event. Blood on the River provides a rare in-depth look at the political vision of enslaved people at the dawn of the Age of Revolution and introduces us to a set of real characters, vividly drawn against the exotic tableau of a riverine world of plantations, rainforest, and Carib allies who controlled a vast South American hinterland. An astonishing original work of history, Blood on the River will change our understanding of revolutions, slavery, and of the story of freedom in the New World.

The Trafalgar Chronicle is a prime source of information as well as the publication of choice for new research about the Georgian Navy, sometimes also loosely referred to as ‘Nelson’s Navy’, though its scope reaches out to include all the sailing navies of the period. The central theme of the 2020 issue is ‘portrayals of the Georgian Navy though art, literature, and film’. The feature article, by Gerald Stulc, MD, analyzes film depictions and portraits of Horatio Nelson, throughout his service and after his death, comparing these images to the clinical realities of Nelson’s injuries in battle.

The Eichmann Trial Diary A Chronicle of the Holocaust

Free Download Sergio Minerbi, Robert L. Miller, "The Eichmann Trial Diary: A Chronicle of the Holocaust"
English | 2011 | ISBN: 1936274213 | EPUB | pages: 256 | 0.3 mb
Fifty years ago in April, 1961, the trial of Adolf Eichmann opened in Jerusalem. At first most observers concentrated on the details of the amazing arrest of the former SS officer hiding in Argentina under an assumed name. The trial informed the world about the gigantic enterprise of extermination and murder carried out by Nazi Germany against the Jews that is now called the Holocaust. RAI–Italian State radio–asked a professor of history and political science who had emigrated from Italy to Palestine in 1947 to report to its listeners. His account came as the trial unfolded with vivid descriptions of the proceedings and how the Israeli public was reacting to the shocking revelations that a worldwide audience discovered for the first time. The author kept his notes as a daily chronicle so that the drama taking place in the courtroom was preserved and became this book. The Eichmann Trial Diary therefore offers a very different view from that of the philosopher Hannah Arendt writing for The New Yorker or the historians reconstructing the event decades later. This account stands out as the best kind of journalism and popular history. It is in the process of being translated into Hebrew for distribution into the Israeli educational system.
