The Nineteenth-Century Novel and the Pre-Cinematic Imagination Fragmentation, Animated Movement and the Modern Episteme (PDF)

Free Download Alberto Gabriele, "The Nineteenth-Century Novel and the Pre-Cinematic Imagination: Fragmentation, Animated Movement and the Modern Episteme"
English | ISBN: 1349961167 | 2024 | 255 pages | PDF | 12 MB
This book fills a gap in existing scholarship on the history of the novel in relation to visual culture by discussing the visual fascination that novelists such as Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, Honoré de Balzac and George Eliot show for several types of pre-cinematic spectacle. It also identifies a so far neglected aspect of novel theory that nineteenth-century authors elaborated by incorporating suggestions from pre-cinematic visual spectacles. By shedding light on forms of visuality that were not entertained by the dominant aesthetic modes of painting and photography, The Nineteenth-Century Novel and the Pre-Cinematic Imagination argues that the presence of nineteenth century pre-cinematic optical illusions in works of fiction redefines the notion of mimesis as animated movement and points to a continuity between pre-cinema, the literary imagination and the structures of knowledge production of the modern episteme.

All the world’s a stage – literally so, given the ubiquitous presence of webcams recording daily life in cities. This footage, allegedly documentary, recreates cities as cinematic environments as people interact with the multitudes of cameras and screens around them. Paula Albuquerque’s original research and experimental films, presented in this groundbreaking book, expose fictionalising elements in archival webcams and explore video surveillance as an urban condition that influences both perceptions of the past and visions of the future.

The Aesthetics and Politics of Cinematic Pedestrianism Walking in Films

Free Download Asli Özgen, "The Aesthetics and Politics of Cinematic Pedestrianism: Walking in Films "
English | ISBN: 9463724753 | 2022 | 256 pages | PDF | 2 MB
The Aesthetics and Politics of Cinematic Pedestrianism: Walking in Films offers a rich exploration of the cinematic aesthetics that filmmakers devised to reflect the corporeal and affective experience of walking in the city. Drawing from literature in urban studies, film theory, and aesthetic philosophy, it is the first monograph to approach the history of cinema from the perspective of walking. A series of case studies providing nuanced analyses of widely referenced figures, such as the flaneur/flâneuse, vagabond, and nomad, reveal how filmmakers articulated their objection to repressive structures through depictions of walking: a common, everyday act yet transgressive, bold, and indomitable. Through the lens of Henri Lefebvre’s theory of space, Michel de Certeau’s concept of pedestrian acts, and Jacques Rancière’s treatment of the politics of aesthetics, Walking in Films traces how cinema evolved in conversation with the mobile body and the new images, styles, and techniques that emerged with it.

Cinematic Vitalism Film Theory and the Question of Life

Free Download Inga Pollmann, "Cinematic Vitalism: Film Theory and the Question of Life "
English | ISBN: 9462983658 | 2018 | 296 pages | PDF | 2 MB
This book argues that there are constitutive links between early twentieth-century German and French film theory and practice, on the one hand, and vitalist conceptions of life in biology and philosophy, on the other. By considering classical film-theoretical texts and their filmic objects in the light of vitalist ideas percolating in scientific and philosophical texts of the time, Cinematic Vitalism reveals the formation of a modernist, experimental and cinematic strand of vitalism in and around the movie theater. The book focuses on the key concepts including rhythm, environment, mood, and development to show how the cinematic vitalism articulated by film theorists and filmmakers maps out connections among human beings, milieus, and technologies that continue to structure our understanding of film.
