Composite Materials in Engineering Structures

Free Download Jennifer M. Davis, "Composite Materials in Engineering Structures "
English | ISBN: 1617288578 | 2011 | 417 pages | PDF | 17 MB
Composite materials such as fiber-reinforced composites, aggregate composites, and natural fiber reinforced composites have been used widely in engineering structures in various industries. Composite laminates, especially fiber reinforced metal laminates (FRMLs) have been used extensively in aerospace structures. Composite laminates are materials that involve some combination on a macroscopic scale of two or more different primary structural engineering constituents such as polymers, metals, ceramics and glasses. This book presents current research from across the globe in the study of composite materials, including the effects of thermo-oxidation on composite materials and structures at high temperatures; damping in composite materials; fatigue and fracture of short fiber composites; and, solutions for postbuckling of composite beams.

Silicone Composite Insulators Materials, Design, Applications

Free Download Silicone Composite Insulators: Materials, Design, Applications By Konstantin O. Papailiou, Frank Schmuck (auth.)
2013 | 495 Pages | ISBN: 3642153194 | PDF | 19 MB
Composite insulators have been in service in electric power networks successfully for more than 40 years, and now up to the highest operating voltages. The present book extensively covers such insulators with a special focus on today’s prevalent material, which is silicone rubber. It includes a detailed description of the electrical and mechanical characteristics of composite insulators, their material properties, their design as well as typical applications and service experience. Particular attention is given to the mechanical behavior of long rod and post insulators, insulated cross-arms, interphase spacers and hollow core apparatus insulators. The state of the art on manufacturing procedures and the selection and dimensioning of the necessary power arc and corona fittings is presented as well as evaluation tests of "old" insulators, i.e. insulators after many years in service. The closing chapter deals with an up to date overview of test procedures and IEC standards. The selection and the contents of the various subjects covered in this book are based on the authors’ more than thirty years of experience with a renowned European manufacturer of composite insulators and string hardware. Their long and active participation in the relevant CIGRE and IEC working bodies adding to this experience. This book is therefore addressed to practicing engineers from electric utilities and the industry, as well as to academic professionals.

Dynamic Failure of Composite and Sandwich Structures

Free Download Dynamic Failure of Composite and Sandwich Structures By Riccardo Panciroli (auth.), Serge Abrate, Bruno Castanié, Yapa D. S. Rajapakse (eds.)
2013 | 643 Pages | ISBN: 9400753284 | PDF | 25 MB
This book presents a broad view of the current state of the art regarding the dynamic response of composite and sandwich structures subjected to impacts and explosions. Each chapter combines a thorough assessment of the literature with original contributions made by the authors. The first section deals with fluid-structure interactions in marine structures. The first chapter focuses on hull slamming and particularly cases in which the deformation of the structure affects the motion of the fluid during the water entry of flexible hulls. Chapter 2 presents an extensive series of tests underwater and in the air to determine the effects of explosions on composite and sandwich structures. Full-scale structures were subjected to significant explosive charges, and such results are extremely rare in the open literature. Chapter 3 describes a simple geometrical theory of diffraction for describing the interaction of an underwater blast wave with submerged structures. The second section addresses the problem of impact on laminated composite structures with chapters devoted to ballistic impacts on pre-stressed composite structures, tests developed to simulate dynamic failure in marine structures, damage mechanisms and energy absorption in low velocity impacts, perforation, the numerical simulation of intra and inter-ply damage during impact, and hail impact on laminated composites. Sandwich structures with laminated facings are considered in Section 3 with chapters dealing with the discrete modeling of honeycomb core during the indentation of sandwich structures, the behavior of fold core sandwich structures during impact, and impact on helicopter blades. The fourth section consists of two chapters presenting experimental results and numerical simulation of composite structures subjected to crash. This volume is intended for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, and engineers interested and involved in analysis and design of composite structures.

Composite Asymptotic Expansions

Free Download Composite Asymptotic Expansions By Augustin Fruchard, Reinhard Schäfke (auth.)
2013 | 161 Pages | ISBN: 3642340342 | PDF | 2 MB
The purpose of these lecture notes is to develop a theory of asymptotic expansions for functions involving two variables, while at the same time using functions involving one variable and functions of the quotient of these two variables. Such composite asymptotic expansions (CAsEs) are particularly well-suited to describing solutions of singularly perturbed ordinary differential equations near turning points. CAsEs imply inner and outer expansions near turning points. Thus our approach is closely related to the method of matched asymptotic expansions. CAsEs offer two unique advantages, however. First, they provide uniform expansions near a turning point and away from it. Second, a Gevrey version of CAsEs is available and detailed in the lecture notes. Three problems are presented in which CAsEs are useful. The first application concerns canard solutions near a multiple turning point. The second application concerns so-called non-smooth or angular canard solutions. Finally an Ackerberg-O’Malley resonance problem is solved.
