Kluge The Haphazard Construction of the Human Mind

Free Download Kluge: The Haphazard Construction of the Human Mind by Gary Marcus, Stephen Hoye, Tantor Audio
English | May 29, 2008 | ISBN: B001AJ19MI | 6 hours and 33 minutes | M4B 32 Kbps | 88 Mb
Are we "noble in reason"? Perfect, in God’s image? Far from it, says New York University psychologist Gary Marcus. In this lucid and revealing book, Marcus argues that the mind is not an elegantly designed organ but a "kluge", a clumsy, cobbled-together contraption. He unveils a fundamentally new way of looking at the human mind – think duct tape, not supercomputer – that sheds light on some of the most mysterious aspects of human nature.
Taking us on a tour of the fundamental areas of human experience – memory, belief, decision making, language, and happiness – Marcus reveals the myriad ways our minds fall short. He examines why people often vote against their own interests, why money can’t buy happiness, why leaders often stick to bad decisions, and why a sentence like "people people left left" ties us into knots even though it’s only four words long.
He also offers surprisingly effective ways to outwit our inner kluge – for example, always consider alternative explanations, make contingency plans, and beware the vivid, personal anecdote. Throughaout, he shows how only evolution – haphazard and undirected – could have produced the minds we humans have, while making a brilliant case for the power and usefulness of imperfection.

«He should have listened to his wife!» The Construction of Women’s Roles in German and Yiddish Pre-modern ‘Wigalois’ Ad

Free Download Annegret Oehme, "He should have listened to his wife!: The Construction of Women’s Roles in German and Yiddish Pre-modern ‘Wigalois’ Ad"
English | ISBN: 3110621991 | 2020 | 88 pages | PDF | 605 KB
This publication uncovers two previously dismissed pre-modern adaptations of the Middle High German Wigalois (1215) by exploring their different approaches to female agency in comparison with the original Wigalois, the Yiddish Viduvilt (14th ct.) and the German Wigoleis (15th ct.). Traditionally, scholarship often concentrated on the Yiddish text presenting female figures as behaving in a "Jewish manner" or embodying famous Jewish mythical figures such as Lilith (see Achim Jaeger / Robert G. Warnock). Rather than trying to argue for or against a figure’s "Jewishness," I evaluate these interpretations from the perspective of Arthurian Literature by showing that the construction of female agency is at the center of all three adaptations of this important chapter of German-Jewish literature and culture.

It gives a historically contextualised close reading of works from authors who have been studied as pionneers of Arabic and Turkish literatures, such as Ziya Pasha, Jurjī Zaydān, Maʿrūf al-Ruṣāfī and Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar.
