Marriage and Divorce in a Multicultural Context Multi-Tiered Marriage and the Boundaries of Civil Law and Religion

Free Download Marriage and Divorce in a Multicultural Context: Multi-Tiered Marriage and the Boundaries of Civil Law and Religion By Professor Joel A. Nichols
2013 | 418 Pages | ISBN: 1107614368 | PDF | 4 MB
American family law makes two key assumptions: first, that the civil state possesses sole authority over marriage and divorce; and second, that the civil law may contain only one regulatory regime for such matters. These assumptions run counter to the multicultural and religiously plural nature of our society. They are also wrong. This book elaborates how those assumptions are descriptively incorrect, and it begins an important conversation about whether more pluralism in family law is normatively desirable. For example, may couples rely upon religious tribunals (Jewish, Muslim, or otherwise) to decide family law disputes? May couples opt into stricter divorce rules, either through premarital contracts or "covenant marriages?" How should the state respond when couples purport to do these things? Intentionally interdisciplinary and international in scope, this volume contains contributions from fourteen leading scholars. The authors address the provocative question of whether the state must consider sharing its jurisdictional authority with other groups in family law.

Goethe in Context

Free Download Charlotte Lee, "Goethe in Context "
English | ISBN: 1316511030 | 2024 | 438 pages | PDF | 10 MB
One of the most prolific and versatile writers of all time, Johann Wolfgang Goethe (1749-1832) made an impact that continues to extend far beyond his native Germany. The variety of human questions and experiences treated in his works is arguably without parallel. He also had (for his era) an unusually long life, which spanned the French Revolution, the end of the Holy Roman Empire and subsequent reshaping of the German-speaking world, and the rapid onset of industrial modernity. In thirty-seven short essays, leading international scholars explore Goethe’s life and times, his literary works, his activity in the realms of art, philosophy and natural science, his reception of – and indeed by – other cultures, and, finally, the resonance of his work in our time. The aim of this collection is to open as many windows as possible onto Goethe’s wide-ranging intellectual and practical activity, and to give a sense of his ongoing importance.

Ecological Psychology in Context James Gibson, Roger Barker, and the Legacy of William James’s Radical Empiricism

Free Download Ecological Psychology in Context: James Gibson, Roger Barker, and the Legacy of William James’s Radical Empiricism By Harry Heft
2001 | 476 Pages | ISBN: 0805823506 | EPUB | 4 MB
In this book Harry Heft examines the historical and theoretical foundations of James J. Gibson’s ecological psychology in 20th century thought, and in turn, integrates ecological psychology and analyses of sociocultural processes. A thesis of the book is that knowing is rooted in the direct experience of meaningful environmental objects and events present in individual-environment processes and at the level of collective, social settings. Ecological Psychology in Context: *traces the primary lineage of Gibson’s ecological approach to William James’s philosophy of radical empiricism; *illuminates how the work of James’s student and Gibson’s mentor, E.B. Holt, served as a catalyst for the development of Gibson’s framework and as a bridge to James’s work; *reveals how ecological psychology reciprocally can advance Jamesian studies by resolving some of the theoretical difficulties that kept James from fully realizing a realist philosophy; *broadens the scope of Gibson’s framework by proposing a synthesis between it and the ecological program of Roger Barker, who discovered complex systems operating at the level of collective, social processes; *demonstrates ways in which the psychological domain can be extended to properties of the environment rendering its features meaningful, publicly accessible, and distributed across person-environment processes; and *shows how Gibson’s work points the way toward overcoming the gap between experimental psychology and the humanities. Intended for scholars and students in the areas of ecological and environmental psychology, theoretical and historical psychology, cognitive science, developmental psychology, anthropology, and philosophy.
