The Persistence of Race Continuity and Change in Germany from the Wilhelmine Empire to National Socialism

Free Download Lara Day, "The Persistence of Race: Continuity and Change in Germany from the Wilhelmine Empire to National Socialism"
English | ISBN: 1785335944 | 2017 | 274 pages | PDF | 2 MB
Race in 20th-century German history is an inescapable topic, one that has been defined overwhelmingly by the narratives of degeneracy that prefigured the Nuremberg Laws and death camps of the Third Reich. As the contributions to this innovative volume show, however, German society produced a much more complex variety of racial representations over the first part of the century. Here, historians explore the hateful depictions of the Nazi period alongside idealized images of African, Pacific and Australian indigenous peoples, demonstrating both the remarkable fixity race had as an object of fascination for German society as well as the conceptual plasticity it exhibited through several historical eras.

Historical narratives have played a critical, if often unnoticed, role in this process. This book seeks to chronicle these historical changes and continuities.

Authority, Continuity and Change in Islamic Law

Free Download Wael B. Hallaq, "Authority, Continuity and Change in Islamic Law"
English | ISBN: 0521803314 | 2001 | 284 pages | PDF | 2 MB
In this path-breaking new book, the author shows how authority guaranteed both continuity and change in Islamic law. Hallaq demonstrates that it was the construction of the absolutist authority of the school founder, an image which he suggests was actually developed later in history, that maintained the foundations of school methodology and hermeneutics. The defense of that methodology gave rise to an infinite variety of individual legal opinions, ultimately accomodating changes in the law. Thus the author concludes that the mechanisms of change were embedded in the very structure of Islamic law, despite its essentially conservative nature.

Postwar Continuity and New Challenges in Central Europe, 1918-1923

Free Download Tomasz Pudlocki, "Postwar Continuity and New Challenges in Central Europe, 1918-1923 "
English | ISBN: 1032027487 | 2021 | 472 pages | PDF | 6 MB
This book presents a multi-layered analysis of the situation in Central Europe after the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The new geopolitics emerging from the Versailles order, and at the same time ongoing fights for borders, considerable war damage, social and economic problems and replacement of administrative staff as well as leaders, all contributed to the fact that unlike Western Europe, Central Europe faced challenges and dilemmas on an unprecedented scale. The editors of this book have invited authors from over a dozen academic institutions to answer the question of to what extent the solutions applied in the Habsburg Monarchy were still practiced in the newly created nation states, and to what extent these new political organisms went their own ways. It offers a closer look at Central Europe with its multiple problems typical of that region after 1918 (organizing the post-imperial space, a new political discourse and attempts to create new national memories, the role of national minorities, solving social problems, and verbal and physical violence expressed in public space). Particular chapters concern post-1918 Central Europe on the local, state and international levels, providing a comprehensive view of this sub-region between 1918 and 1923.

Illegal Annexation and State Continuity The Case of the Incorporation of the Baltic States by the USSR

Free Download Lauri Malksoo, "Illegal Annexation and State Continuity: The Case of the Incorporation of the Baltic States by the USSR : A Study of the Tension Between Normativity and power in International Law"
English | 2003 | pages: 409 | ISBN: 9041121773 | PDF | 9,0 mb
The depth and intensity of the transformation in Eastern and Central Europe in the 1980’s and 1990’s took most diplomats and political commentators by surprise. Needless to say, European politics now looks completely different from how it did during the stale years of the Cold War. This volume is an in-depth analysis of one aspect of the transformation – namely the Baltic States’ struggle to regain the statehood they had lost in the Soviet occupation in June 1940. It analyses the claim of illegality of the Soviet occupation, arguments about possible prescription, the legal consequences of illegality as well as the restoration of the statehood of the three Baltic States after 1990. The relevant facts are clearly described and the application of the legal rules is skillfully based on arguments from precedent and legal principle. The author also discusses the question of the significance of (pure) legal status, detached from the enjoyment of rights and obligations which that status entails in law.
