Dutch Contributions to the Fourteenth International Congress of Slavists

Free Download Jos Schaeken Peter Houtzagers,Janneke Kalsbeek, "Dutch Contributions to the Fourteenth International Congress of Slavists: Ohrid, September 10-16, 2008. Linguistics"
English | 2008 | pages: 579 | ISBN: 9042024429 | PDF | 5,0 mb
This volume contains articles by 17 slavists from the Low Countries. Although they are all about Slavic linguistics, they cover a wide range of subjects and their theoretical implications are often not restricted to slavistics alone. Most contributions deal with Russian or Slavic in general, but South and West Slavic are also represented. The reader who knows the strong points for which Dutch slavistics is traditionally known and appreciated will not be disappointed: s/he will find papers on syntax and semantics (Fortuin, Van Helden, Honselaar, Keijsper, Tribušinina), aspectology (Barentsen, Genis), philology (Veder), historical Slavic phonology and morphology (Derksen, Kortlandt, Vermeer), dialectology (Houtzagers, Pronk), the study of sentence intonation (Odé) and papers representing crossroads between these disciplines: philology and historical linguistics (Hendriks, Schaeken), aspectology and philology (Kalsbeek). Apart from its quality in the linguistic fields enumerated here, Dutch Slavic linguistics is known for its empirical approach: the main goal is to find explanations for linguistic reality. Theory is relevant inasmuch as it helps us to find such explanations and not for its own sake. Though each and every paper in this volume exemplifies this empirical attitude, it might be especially illustrative to mention that almost all authors who studied the larger contemporary Slavic languages made extensive use of language corpus resources, part of which were collected at the University of Amsterdam.

Theoretical, Experimental, and Numerical Contributions to the Mechanics of Fluids and Solids A collection of papers in honor o

Free Download Theoretical, Experimental, and Numerical Contributions to the Mechanics of Fluids and Solids: A collection of papers in honor of Paul M. Naghdi By James Casey, Marcel J. Crochet (auth.), James Casey, Marcel J. Crochet (eds.)
1995 | 852 Pages | ISBN: 3034899548 | PDF | 19 MB
This special issue of ZAMP is published to honor Paul M. Naghdi for his contributions to mechanics over the last forty years and more. It is offered in celebration of his long, productive career in continuum mechan ics; a career which has been marked by a passion for the intrinsic beauty of the subject, an uncompromising adherence to academic standards, and an untiring devotion to our profession. Originally, this issue was planned in celebration of Naghdi’s 70th birthday, which occurred on 29 March 1994. But, as the papers were being prepared for the press, it became evident that the illness from which Professor Naghdi had been suffering during recent months was extremely serious. On 26 May 1994, a reception took place in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Berkeley, at which Naghdi received The Berkeley Citation (which is given in lieu of an honorary degree) and where he was also presented with the Table of Contents of the present collection. Subse quently, he had the opportunity to read the papers in manuscript form. He was very touched that his colleagues had chosen to honor him with their fine contributions. The knowledge that he was held in such high esteem by his fellow scientists brought a special pleasure and consolation to him in his last weeks. On Saturday evening, 9 July 1994, Paul Naghdi succumbed to the lung cancer which he had so courageously endured.

The SimCalc Vision and Contributions Democratizing Access to Important Mathematics

Free Download The SimCalc Vision and Contributions: Democratizing Access to Important Mathematics By Jeremy Roschelle, Stephen Hegedus (auth.), Stephen J. Hegedus, Jeremy Roschelle (eds.)
2013 | 480 Pages | ISBN: 940075695X | PDF | 12 MB
This volume provides essential guidance for transforming mathematics learning in schools through the use of innovative technology, pedagogy, and curriculum. It presents clear, rigorous evidence of the impact technology can have in improving students learning of important yet complex mathematical concepts — and goes beyond a focus on technology alone to clearly explain how teacher professional development, pedagogy, curriculum, and student participation and identity each play an essential role in transforming mathematics classrooms with technology. Further, evidence of effectiveness is complemented by insightful case studies of how key factors lead to enhancing learning, including the contributions of design research, classroom discourse, and meaningful assessment. The volume organizes over 15 years of sustained research by multiple investigators in different states and countries who together developed an approach called "SimCalc" that radically transforms how Algebra and Calculus are taught. The SimCalc program engages students around simulated motions, such as races on a soccer field, and builds understanding using visual representations such as graphs, and familiar representations such as stories to help students to develop meaning for more abstract mathematical symbols. Further, the SimCalc program leverages classroom wireless networks to increase participation by all students in doing, talking about, and reflecting on mathematics. Unlike many technology programs, SimCalc research shows the benefits of balanced attention to curriculum, pedagogy, teacher professional development, assessment and technology — and has proven effectiveness results at the scale of hundreds of schools and classrooms. Combining the findings of multiple investigators in one accessible volume reveals the depth and breadth of the research program, and engages readers interested in:* Engaging students in deeply learning the important concepts in mathematics* Designing innovative curriculum, software, and professional development· Effective uses of technology to improve mathematics education* Creating integrated systems of teaching that transform mathematics classrooms* Scaling up new pedagogies to hundreds of schools and classrooms* Conducting research that really matters for the future of mathematics learning* Engaging students in deeply learning the important concepts in mathematics* Designing innovative curriculum, software, and professional development· Effective uses of technology to improve mathematics education* Creating integrated systems of teaching that transform mathematics classrooms* Scaling up new pedagogies to hundreds of schools and classrooms* Conducting research that really matters for the future of mathematics learning

A constitution has the task of realizing its regulatory objective for the entire duration of its existence. In doing so, it bears responsibility for the present, but also for the future. It must ensure that the legitimate interests of future generations are also taken into account in today’s decision-making and policies. The concept of intertemporal protection of fundamental rights developed by German constitutional jurisprudence and the jurisprudence in other countries have particularly stimulated the discussion on the constitution’s responsibility for the future, which is important in numerous areas.
