This book explores a cluster of philosophical, historical, and logical problems concerning the foundations of the theory of plane area in elementary geometry. The motivation of this study is a notable geometrical proposition known as De Zolt’s postulate, which asserts that a polygon cannot be equal in area to a proper polygonal part. The book is the first systematic investigation of the philosophical and foundational significance of this proposition, which can also be described as the "fundamental theorem" of the theory of plane area.

Crossroads Of Decision The State Department and Foreign Policy, 1933-1937

Free Download Howard Jablon, "Crossroads Of Decision: The State Department and Foreign Policy, 1933-1937"
English | 2002 | ISBN: 0813190576 | EPUB | pages: 196 | 0.2 mb
In this provocative interpretation of New Deal diplomacy, Howard Jablon challenges the view that the State Department was wiser and more expert at international maneuver than was President Franklin D. Roosevelt in the early years of his presidency. These were years of growing world tension, with the preliminary shots of World War II being fired as Japan took over Manchuria, Italy made Ethiopia an extension of its new Roman Empire, and all the European great powers tried out their new weaponry in Spain. The author argues that the department’s advice in this period actually led to unfortunate decisions which later had a considerable impact on events leading to World War II.

At a Crossroads Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean

Free Download MarĂa Marta Ferreyra, "At a Crossroads: Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean "
English | ISBN: 1464810141 | 2017 | 298 pages | EPUB | 22 MB
Higher education in Latin America and the Caribbean has expanded dramatically in the past 15 years, as the average gross enrollment rate has more than doubled, and many new institutions and programs have been opened. Although higher education access has become more equitable, and higher education supply has become more varied, many of the ‘new’ students in the system are, on average, less academically ready than are their more advantaged counterparts. Furthermore, only half of higher education students, on average, complete their degree, and labor market returns to higher education vary greatly across institutions and programs. Thus, higher education is at a crossroads today. Given the region’s urgency to raise productivity in a low-growth, fiscally constrained environment, going past this crossroads requires the formation of skilled human capital fast and efficiently. ‘At a Crossroads: Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean’ contributes to the discussion by studying quality, variety, and equity of higher education in Latin America and the Caribbean. The book presents comprehensive evidence on the recent higher education expansion and evolution of higher education labor market returns. Using novel data and state-of-the-art methods, it studies demand and supply drivers of the recent expansion. It investigates the behavior of institutions and students and explores the unintended consequences of large-scale higher education policies. Framing the analysis are the singular characteristics of the higher education market and the market segmentation induced by the variety of students and institutions in the system. At this crossroads, a role emerges for incentives, information, accountability, and choice.

Recent events suggest liberal capitalism harbours two dangerous seeds of self-destruction; growing inequality and a tendency for markets to spiral out of control. This book advocates the restoration to an earlier state of another sub-system of liberal capitalism, some of the features of which lie at the heart of liberal capitalism’s malaise.
