Author: Robert W. Merry
Narrator: Jacques Roy

Exploring a critical lesson about our nation that is as timely today as ever, Decade of Disunion shows how the country came apart during the enveloping slavery crisis of the 1850s. The Mexican War brought vast new territories to the United States, which precipitated a growing crisis over slavery. The new territories seemed unsuitable for the type of agriculture that depended on slave labor, but they lay south of the line where slavery was permitted by the 1820 Missouri Compromise. The subject of expanding slavery to the new territories became a flash point between North and South. First came the 1850 compromise legislation, which strengthened the fugitive slave law and outraged the North. Then in 1854, Congress repealed the Missouri Compromise altogether, unleashing a violent conflict in "Bleeding Kansas" over whether that territory would become free or slave. The 1857 Dred Scott decision-abrogating any rights of African Americans, enslaved or free-further outraged the North.

Continental Scientific Drilling A Decade of Progress, and Challenges for the Future

Free Download Continental Scientific Drilling: A Decade of Progress, and Challenges for the Future By Ulrich Harms, Rolf Emmermann (auth.), Dr. Ulrich Harms, Prof. Dr. Christian Koeberl, Prof. Dr. Mark D. Zoback (eds.)

Scientific drilling is an indispensable tool of modern Earth science – search, as it provides the only means of obtaining direct information on processes operating at depth. Drilling allows for the determination of – situ properties of solid materials and fluids and permits testing of hypot- ses and models derived from surface observations. In addition, drill holes may be used as a natural laboratory for experiments and as observatories for long-term monitoring of on-going active processes. Earth drilling, therefore, plays a critical role in scientific research directed towards – proved understanding of the workings of our planet and has a key role in solving urgent socio-economic problems. As a rule, drilling projects are an integral component of major geosci- tific research programs, comprising comprehensive pre-site investigations, accompanying laboratory studies, the drilling phase itself, and consecutive measurements and tests in the drill hole. Such drilling programs are costly and thus only realizable to a limited extent. International cost sharing, the optimal utilization of all available resources, the incorporation of inter- tional leading experts, and the application of the existing know-how, as well as the selection of an optimal drilling location ("World Geological Site"), are thus essential elements of an international scientific drilling p- gram.

Decade of Transition

Free Download Decade of Transition By Abraham Ben-Zvi
1998 | 250 Pages | ISBN: 0231112637 | PDF | 4 MB
Historians have long held that the Kennedy administration forged the American alliance with Israel as a way of courting political support from American Jews. In contrast, the Eisenhower administration is believed to have considered Israel a political and strategic liability. In Decade of Transition, Abraham Ben-Zvi now shows that the Eisenhower years were an "incubation period" during which the ground-work was laid for the eventual American-Israeli alliance. As a result, President Kennedy’s Israeli policy is understood as not the beginning, but a continuation of a process with foundations in the prior administration.Focusing on the period between Eisenhower’s inauguration and Kennedy’s landmark decision to sell the Hawk anti-aircraft missile to Israel, Ben-Zvi shows how the warming of American-Israeli diplomatic relations began with Eisenhower’s second term. In his first administration, relations between the two countries reached a nadir with the Suez War, but in 1958, Israel’s reaction to an intensifying crisis in Jordan caused Eisenhower to reevaluate Israel’s strategic potential. Amid growing fears of unrest in the Middle East and a perceived Soviet threat, Israel could now become a useful ally and a new base of stability in the region. Ben-Zvi argues that both Eisenhower and Kennedy sought an alliance with Israel not to satisfy domestic political concerns, but to invest in Israel’s growing strength and political stability. He analyzes Eisenhower’s initial perceptions of Israel, and shows how they evolved along with his estimate of the increasing significance of the Middle East on the world stage. Ben-Zvi traces the process of deterrence and coercion used by both presidents to transform Israel into a strategic asset for the United States, from American insistence on inspecting Israel’s nuclear weapons facilities to failed attempts to influence Israel’s policy on Palestinian refugees.Thoroughly researched and drawing on thousands of documents-many only recently made public- Decade of Transition provides a significant reevaluation of the nature and origins of the American-Israeli relationship and the shaping of the modern Middle East.
