Seismology has come a long way. Being the scientific study of seismic waves and their allied phenomena, it has entered a multidisciplinary realm. As the main tool, it provides a wealth of information when applied systematically to dig inside the Earth structure. Notwithstanding, the utility of seismic waves has increased manifold. Starting from knowing the epicenter of seismic events, it has influenced mapping of civil engineering structures such as dams and bridges, as well as huge constructions. Although there is no dearth of technical papers in the area of seismic waves, there is an absence of synchronized and recent coherent contents in the direction of seismic waves.

Recessions Prospects and Developments

Free Download Nerea M. Perez, "Recessions: Prospects and Developments"
English | ISBN: 1604568666 | 2008 | 174 pages | PDF | 3 MB
A critical consideration in understanding business cycles is the amplification and propagation of shocks to the economic system. Many recessions seem to arise without a clearly identifiable cause or at least one of significant magnitude to justify an economy-wide recession. How can a small shock cause large changes in the economy? What are the mechanisms that amplify a modest shock such that a serious recession ensues? Despite the persistent search for a mechanism for business cycle amplification and propagation, much research in business cycles seems to ignore the likely role of the financial system. If a shock to the economy inhibits the capital allocation capability of an economy, then a seemingly mild shock may be amplified through its impact on new investment thereby snuffing out economic growth and causing a recession. This book provides new research on the field of recessions from around the globe.

Public Transit Issues and Developments

Free Download Calvin B. Lang, "Public Transit Issues and Developments"
English | ISBN: 1606926896 | 2009 | 159 pages | PDF | 3 MB
Through the New Starts program, the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) evaluates and recommends new fixed guideway transit projects for funding using the evaluation criteria identified in law. In August 2007, FTA issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM), in part, to incorporate certain provisions within the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient, Transportation Equity A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU) into the evaluation process. SAFETEA-LU requires the authors to annually review FTA’s New Starts process. This book discusses (1) the information captured by New Starts project justification criteria, (2) challenges FTA faces as it works to improve the New Starts program, and (3) options for evaluating New Starts projects. To address these objectives, the authors reviewed statutes, FTA guidance and regulations governing the New Starts program, and interviewed experts, project sponsors, and Department of Transportation (DOT) officials.

The book is an historical monograph on deep-sea mineral-related activities and attitudes towards deep-sea mining in the 20th Century which makes comparisons with the current situation in regard to those activities and attitudes. It reviews developments in the study of, and prospects and plans for mining deep-sea manganese nodules, cobalt-rich crusts, hydrothermal deposits, and phosphorites, and discusses associated environmental, technological, and economic issues. It is based on several sources. First, the author’s experience gleaned from around 50 years of attending conferences on the subject (the most important of which was the annual Underwater Mining Institutes held from 1970 onwards at which much of the material in the book was first exposed), second, discussions with and advice from the author’s colleagues on the subject, all attributed, and third, the published literature.
