Creating Democracy brings into dialogue for the first time two important theorists of democracy: Hannah Arendt (1906-75) and Mikhail Bakhtin (1895-975). Their shared conception of democracy stemming from their encounters with totalitarian governments – Nazi Germany for Arendt and Stalinist Russia for Bakhtin – and the rise of authoritarian populism in both Europe and America make their ideas more relevant than ever.

For What Tomorrow . . . A Dialogue

Free Download Jacques Derrida, "For What Tomorrow . . .: A Dialogue "
English | ISBN: 0804746273 | 2004 | 253 pages | PDF | 6 MB
"For what tomorrow will be, no one knows," writes Victor Hugo. This dialogue, proposed to Jacques Derrida by the historian Elisabeth Roudinesco, brings together two longtime friends who share a common history and an intellectual heritage. While their perspectives are often different, they have many common reference points: psychoanalysis, above all, but also the authors and works that have come to be known outside France as "post-structuralist." Beginning with a revealing glance back at the French intellectual scene over the past forty years, Derrida and Roudinesco go on to address a number of major social and political issues. Their extraordinarily wide-ranging discussion covers topics such as immigration, hospitality, gender equality, and "political correctness"; the disordering of the traditional family, same-sex unions, and reproductive technologies; the freedom of the "subject" over and against "scientism"; violence against animals; the haunting specter of communism and revolution; the present and future of anti-Semitism (as well as that which marked Derrida’s own history) and the hazardous politics of criticizing the state of Israel; the principled abolition of the death penalty; and, to conclude, a chapter "in praise of psychoanalysis." These exchanges not only help to situate Derrida’s thought within the milieu out of which it grew, they also show more clearly than ever how this thought, impelled by a deep concern for justice, can be brought to bear on the social and political issues of our day. What emerges here above all, far from an abstract, apolitical discourse, is a call to take responsibility-for the inheritance of a past, for the singularities of the present, and for the unforeseeable tasks of the future.

Dialogue of the Deaf The Government and the RBI

English | ISBN: 9386224488 | 2017 | 304 pages | EPUB | 320 KB
Central Banks are much like what Voltaire once said about god – if he did not exist, it would have been necessary to invent him. When the times are good, they are taken for granted; when things go wrong, they are prayed to. Like god, central banks also move in mysterious ways: it is hard to tell how much of what they do has economic substance and how much is purely political.Dialogue of the Deaf is the history of the politics of monetary policy in India. The workings of the Reserve Bank of India and its strange relationship with the government forms the core of the book. It is forever walking the tightrope, torn between the law that governs it and the politics of the governments that control it. Or, as was famously said by the Governor of the Bank of England when it was being set up, it has to play the role of a ‘Hindoo wife’ who offers advice but never asserts herself. In this easy-to-grasp book, T. C. A. Srinivasa Raghavan has described some of the main elements of this complex relationship with facts, anecdotes and analysis stretching back to nearly 180 years in a manner easily accessible to the lay reader who wants to get a sense of the workings of money, monetary policy and the men who control it in India

Interactive Dialogue Sequences in Middle English Drama

Free Download Gabriella Mazzon, "Interactive Dialogue Sequences in Middle English Drama"
English | 2009 | pages: 241 | ISBN: 9027254303 | PDF | 1,9 mb
This book looks at mediaeval English drama using the theoretical frameworks of historical sociopragmatics and dialogue analysis. It focuses on the collection of cycle plays known as the N.TownPlays, preserved in a manuscript from the fifteenth century. The book examines various linguistic markers that are important for the expression of social relations and pragmatic stance: pronouns and terms of address, modal markers, performatives, and sequential structures such as question-answer, imperative-compliance, etc. These elements are examined separately and then brought together to arrive at a more integrated analysis of dramatic dialogue and of the dynamics of interaction it portrays. A separate chapter is devoted to tracing the same mechanisms on a different communication level, i.e. in ‘dialogue’ with the audience, which is particularly relevant to the instructional purposes of the plays. The book will be useful to students and scholars of pragmatics, historical linguistics, dialogue studies and drama studies.

Oral History The challenges of dialogue (Studies in Narrative)

Free Download Marta Kurkowska-Budzan, Krystof Zamorski, "Oral History: The challenges of dialogue (Studies in Narrative)"
English | 2009 | pages: 246 | ISBN: 9027226504 | PDF | 1,7 mb
Oral History: The Challenges of Dialogue shows contemporary oral history at work in a variety of contexts, levels, and engagements. The issues developed in the book correspond to different stages of research: preparing and conducting the interview, evaluating and analyzing the collected material, publishing in the broad sense of speaking to different audiences, and finally, addressing the dilemmas and philosophical reflections with an emphasis on ethics. This book aims to address oral history from two perspectives. The first is the perspective of oral history as dialoguing, the second is the presentation of concrete situations, research, persons, and their own stories as built on the solid ground of discourse and within a concrete context. The chapters embody the experiences of the authors, their efforts and successes, as well as their failures in dialoguing with narrators. Unveiled in this book is the extensive breadth of contemporary oral history work, bridging epistemological and methodological horizons.

Authors in Dialogue

Free Download Marucci, "Authors in Dialogue"
English | ISBN: 1789975980 | 2020 | 232 pages | PDF | 2 MB
This book gathers together essays and papers written over a time span of around fifteen years. Partly retitled and revised, they were selected for the book because they all focus on the dialogic element in a series of literary works produced in the period extending from late Romanticism to early Modernism. By dialogic the author means the sharing of common preoccupations, the recursiveness of motifs, themes and patterns, the emergence of constants, a network of explicit or hidden confrontations. Dialogues may then arise between an author and other contemporaries in the form of an explicit theoretical discussion in letters or critical essays; or implicitly, and allusively, in inventive negotiations that respond to previous works through parody or adaptation. After a concise introduction stating the author’s theoretical debt to the insightful theories of the Russian semiotician and typologist Yuri Lotman, single essays discuss Byron, Ruskin, George Eliot, Matthew Arnold, Hopkins, Ouida, Joyce and T. S. Eliot.
