This is the second part of the two-volume set (LNCS 8023-8024) that constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Cross-Cultural Design, held as part of the 15th International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction, HCII 2013, held in Las Vegas, USA in July 2013, jointly with 12 other thematically similar conferences. The total of 1666 papers and 303 posters presented at the HCII 2013 conferences was carefully reviewed and selected from 5210 submissions. These papers address the latest research and development efforts and highlight the human aspects of design and use of computing systems. The papers accepted for presentation thoroughly cover the entire field of human-computer interaction, addressing major advances in knowledge and effective use of computers in a variety of application areas. This two-volume set contains 113 papers. The papers in this volume focus on the following topics: cultural issues in business and industry; culture, health and quality of life; cross-cultural and intercultural collaboration; culture and the smart city; cultural differences on the Web.

Prefrontal Cortex Developmental Differences, Executive and Cognitive Functions and Role in Neurological Disorders

Free Download Robert O. Collins, "Prefrontal Cortex: Developmental Differences, Executive and Cognitive Functions and Role in Neurological Disorders "
English | ISBN: 1626186634 | 2013 | 189 pages | PDF | 6 MB
The prefrontal cortex (PFC) is the anterior part of the frontal lobes of the brain, lying in front of the motor and premotor areas and has been implicated in planning complex cognitive behavior, personality expression, decision making and moderating social behaviour. In this book, the authors discuss the developmental differences, executive and cognitive functions and role in neurological disorders relating to the functioning of the prefrontal cortex. Topics include developmental long-chain omega-3 fatty acid deficiency and prefrontal cortex pathology in psychiatric disorders; addiction and the prefrontal cortex; cognitive functioning and prefrontal cortex damage in children and adolescents; prefrontal cortex dysfunction and neurocognitive deficits in schizophrenia; and the developmental relationship between executive function and the prefrontal cortex in young children.

Dust in the Universe Similarities And Differences

Free Download K S Krishna Swamy, "Dust in the Universe: Similarities And Differences"
English | 2005 | pages: 266 | ISBN: 9812562931 | PDF | 11,8 mb
The study of dust in the universe is an exciting area in current astronomy. Dust formed during an earlier epoch could be different from that formed at a later time, but the nature and composition of dust is not presently understood in its entirety. The comprehensive study presented in this book provides a much needed critical analysis of different types of dust in the universe. The information derived from presolar grains from comets, meteorites and interplanetary dust particles as well as the relevant laboratory studies are discussed. This should help in our goal of understanding the evolution of dust with cosmic time.

Gender Differences in Prenatal Substance Exposure

Adverse effects of prenatal exposure to neurotoxins, including cocaine, alcohol, marijuana, and lead, are well documented and range from initial growth deficits to later cognitive and behavioral problems. Exciting new research has found that there are gender differences in these sequelae resulting in different outcomes for males and females. Namely, exposed males appear to be more vulnerable and experience greater deficits than exposed females.

Regional Mortality Differences in Germany

Free Download Regional Mortality Differences in Germany By Eva U.B. Kibele (auth.)
2012 | 304 Pages | ISBN: 9400744315 | PDF | 29 MB
Regional mortality differences are one dimension of health inequalities, but its trends and determinants in Germany are widely unknown. This book examines and illustrates patterns of regional mortality in Germany-with focus on small-area differentials-and their changes over time. It identifies explanatory factors at individual and regional level. Mortality differences between eastern and western Germany exist, but small-area mortality differentials are often greater. Though the main spatial mortality patterns remain, this study provides evidence that some distinct changes in the small-area mortality patterns in Germany-especially among women-occurred within a short period of time. Mortality inequalities at younger ages and in behavior-related causes as well as differences in socioeconomic conditions contribute strongly to regional mortality differences in Germany. The book shows that the complex interplay between individual- and regional-level mortality risk factors requires a multidimensional approach to reduce regional mortality inequalities.
