English | ISBN: 1634838718 | 2015 | 265 pages | PDF | 3 MB
This book provides the latest research in ethnic and cultural identity. The first chapter examines the relationship between ethnic identity, culture, body dissatisfaction and related disorder eating behaviors among diverse ethnic groups of adolescent and young female adults. The second chapter discusses migrants’ perceptions of intergroup relations and ethnic group statue in the host society. The third chapter provides an overview of research on perceived discrimination, which is considered the most severe stressor for minority individuals given its persuasive impact on health and well-being. The fourth and fifth chapters include discussions on the relationship between openness to experience, ethnocentrism, and ethnic prejudice, and the effects of language policy on ethnic minority language maintenance among a relatively newer community in Manchester. The sixth chapter examines how social, gendered, and economic forces have changed the ways in which family systems create and sustain a familial identity. The second half of the book includes a narrative analysis to explore how a sample of Muslim-identified women attributed meaning to the practice of veiling and the contexts by which women decided to – or not to -wear the hijab; a summary of the results of a qualitative study exploring the influence of discrimination on identity negotiation in transracial international adoptees; provides a review of established health risks to Latino-identifying persons in the United States and successful interventions with various samples; deconstructs the Latin lover stereotype; and finally, maps racial neoliberalism in U.S. popular culture.

Immigration and Discrimination (Un)Welcoming Others

English | June 7, 2024 | ISBN: 019889869X | True EPUB | 240 pages | 0.8/1.8 MB
Prompted both by past policies and recent developments concerning immigration around the world that center on race, ethnicity, religion, and other identities, Immigration and Discrimination explores what bases states are morally permitted to use for their admission decisions and policies, and why. Many scholars appeal to the terminology and concept of wrongful discrimination when discussing identity-based immigration decisions, but there has been little to no effort dedicated to examining whether the idea of wrongful discrimination-traditionally applied to interactions among people within a state-is applicable at the global level, or to interactions among people in different states.

Beyond Discrimination Racial Inequality in a Post-Racist Era

Free Download Fredrick C. Harris, "Beyond Discrimination: Racial Inequality in a Post-Racist Era"
English | ISBN: 0871544555 | 2013 | 376 pages | PDF | 3 MB
Nearly a half century after the civil rights movement, racial inequality remains a defining feature of American life. Along a wide range of social and economic dimensions, African Americans consistently lag behind whites. This troubling divide has persisted even as many of the obvious barriers to equality, such as state-sanctioned segregation and overt racial hostility, have markedly declined. How then can we explain the stubborn persistence of racial inequality? In Beyond Discrimination: Racial Inequality in a Post-Racist Era, a diverse group of scholars provides a more precise understanding of when and how racial inequality can occur without its most common antecedents, prejudice and discrimination. Beyond Discrimination focuses on the often hidden political, economic and historical mechanisms that now sustain the black-white divide in America. The first set of chapters examines the historical legacies that have shaped contemporary race relations. Desmond King reviews the civil rights movement to pinpoint why racial inequality became an especially salient issue in American politics. He argues that while the civil rights protests led the federal government to enforce certain political rights, such as the right to vote, addressing racial inequities in housing, education, and income never became a national priority. The volume then considers the impact of racial attitudes in American society and institutions. Phillip Goff outlines promising new collaborations between police departments and social scientists that will improve the measurement of racial bias in policing. The book finally focuses on the structural processes that perpetuate racial inequality. Devin Fergus discusses an obscure set of tax and insurance policies that, without being overtly racially drawn, penalizes residents of minority neighborhoods and imposes an economic handicap on poor blacks and Latinos. Naa Oyo Kwate shows how apparently neutral and apolitical market forces concentrate fast food and alcohol advertising in minority urban neighborhoods to the detriment of the health of the community. As it addresses the most pressing arenas of racial inequality, from education and employment to criminal justice and health, Beyond Discrimination exposes the unequal consequences of the ordinary workings of American society. It offers promising pathways for future research on the growing complexity of race relations in the United States.

The Grammar of Caste Economic Discrimination in Contemporary India

Free Download Ashwini Deshpande, "The Grammar of Caste: Economic Discrimination in Contemporary India"
English | 2019 | pages: 330 | ISBN: 0199471983, 0198072031 | PDF | 2,9 mb
Is the caste system disappearing? Are traditional hierarchies being replaced by competing equalities? Do globalization and liberalization automatically result in diminishing disparities? Are modern labour markets intrinsically meritocratic and efficient? Challenging the dominant discourse and demolishing various myths, this book provides answers to these and other critical questions on caste in its contemporary avatar. Linking the economics of caste with its politics, sociology, and history, this innovative book provides a stimulating assessment of continuities and changes in caste disparities over the last two decades. Deshpande uses rich empirical data to uncover how contemporary, formal, urban sector labour markets reflect a deep awareness of caste, religious, gender, and class cleavages. She convincingly argues that discrimination is neither a relic of the past nor is it confined to rural areas, but is very much a modern, formal sector phenomenon. This insightful book, with a new introduction to the paperback edition, is an important step towards a multidisciplinary dialogue for understanding (and mitigating) inequalities based on birth and descent.
