Order and Disorder Anthropological Perspectives

Free Download Keebet von Benda-Beckmann, "Order and Disorder: Anthropological Perspectives "
English | ISBN: 1845451988 | 2008 | 184 pages | PDF | 7 MB
Disorder and instability are matters of continuing public concern. Terrorism, as a threat to global order, has been added to preoccupations with political unrest, deviance and crime. Such considerations have prompted the return to the classic anthropological issues of order and disorder. Examining order within the political and legal spheres and in contrasting local settings, the papers in this volume highlight its complex and contested nature. Elaborate displays of order seem necessary to legitimate the institutionalization of violence by military and legal establishments, yet violent behaviour can be incorporated into the social order by the development of boundaries, rituals and established processes of conflict resolution. Order is said to depend upon justice, yet injustice legitimates disruptive protest. Case studies from Siberia, India, Indonesia, Tibet, West Africa, Morocco and the Ottoman Empire show that local responses are often inconsistent in their valorization, acceptance and condemnation of disorder.

Treatment of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in Special Populations A Cognitive Restructuring Program

Free Download Kim T. Mueser, "Treatment of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in Special Populations: A Cognitive Restructuring Program"
English | ISBN: 1433804646 | 2009 | 404 pages | PDF | 3 MB
People who are the most likely to be traumatized and to develop PTSD are often the least likely to receive treatment. For example, individuals with serious mental illness, substance abuse, or a history of poverty; adolescents; ethnic minorities; and survivors of disasters or mass violence are all more vulnerable to traumatization than those in the general population. This book describes a flexible, low-stress, manualized program for treating PTSD in these individuals, who often have limited social support and resources and face multiple life challenges. The program emphasizes the use of cognitive restructuring to help clients recognize, challenge, and change negative and unhelpful thoughts and feelings related to their past traumatic experiences. The program is brief just 12 16 sessions and focuses on building lasting skills that can be applied to treating the aftereffects of past traumas, lessening the impact of ongoing stressors, and helping clients to more effectively manage their lives. The program is solidly based on research and clinical practice, with modifications to accommodate the unique challenges of special populations. In contrast to exposure-based treatments for PTSD, this treatment is designed to minimize stress and to help participants increase social supports during and following treatment. This accessible volume includes everything needed to implement the program, including session-by-session instructions, sample dialogues to demonstrate techniques, and user-friendly handouts and worksheets that can be photocopied and used in sessions. It will be useful to social workers, primary care providers, mental health counselors, clinical psychologists, addiction treatment providers, psychiatrists, and other helping professionals who interact with special populations and trauma victims.

A Great Disorder National Myth and the Battle for America [Audiobook]

Free Download A Great Disorder: National Myth and the Battle for America (Audiobook)
English | ASIN: B0D6829CKX | 2024 | 20 hours and 53 minutes | M4B@64 kbps | 601 MB
Author: Richard Slotkin
Narrator: Chris Sorensen

Red America and Blue America are divided with wildly diverging views of why government exists and who counts as American. Their ideologies are grounded in different versions of American history, endorsing irreconcilable visions of patriotism and national identity. A Great Disorder is a bold, urgent work that helps us make sense of today’s culture wars through a brilliant reconsideration of America’s foundational myths and their use in contemporary politics. Richard Slotkin identifies five myths, born of different eras, that have shaped our conception of what it means to be American: the myths of the Frontier, the Founding, the Civil War (which he breaks into two opposing camps, Emancipation and the Lost Cause), and the Good War, embodied by the multiethnic platoon fighting for freedom. His argument is that while Trump and his MAGA followers have played up a frontier-inspired hostility to the federal government and rallied around Confederate symbols to champion a racially exclusive definition of American nationality, Blue America, taking its cue from the protest movements of the 1960s, envisions a limitlessly pluralistic country in which the federal government is the ultimate enforcer of rights and opportunities. American history-and the foundations of our democracy-have become a battleground. It is not clear at this time which vision will prevail.
