A Divided Kingdom The Spanish Monarchy From Isabel To Juan Carlos

Free Download John Van der Kiste, "A Divided Kingdom: The Spanish Monarchy From Isabel To Juan Carlos"
English | 2007 | ISBN: 0750937890 | EPUB | pages: 256 | 0.5 mb
There is little available on the dramatic and colourful history of the Spanish monarchy. Experienced author and historian John Van der Kiste provides a readable and anecdotal look at one of the key European dynasties from the nineteenth century to the present. He begins with the wayward, ill-educated Isabella II, who was forced to marry her nephew. During much of her reign power was in the hands of her generals and her exile and abdication saw the crown of Spain hawked round Europe for two years. It was briefly accepted then refused by Prince Leopold of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen – thus starting the Franco-Prussian War – and, after a short, unsuccessful stint as a republic, the monarchy was restored when Isabella’s son Alfonso XIII was chosen as King. John Van der Kiste leads us through his popular reign, the reign of his son – who married one of Queen Victoria’s granddaughters – and the socialist movement in Spain after the Great War which led to the dictatorship of Primo de Rovera. Finishing with the Spanish Civil War, the ‘reign’ of General Franco and the return of the monarchy with the present King, Juan Carlos, this is a fascinating look at the Spanish Bourbons.

A House Divided The Lives of Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee (Jules Archer History for Young Readers)

Free Download Allen C. Guelzo, "A House Divided: The Lives of Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee (Jules Archer History for Young Readers)"
English | 2015 | ISBN: 1632206048 | EPUB | pages: 176 | 4.3 mb
A House Divided is an exciting introduction to two of the most fascinating players in the American Civil War. Ulysses S. Grant was gruff and sloppy, the son of a hardworking but uneducated man opposed to slavery. Robert E. Lee, a slave owner himself, was a polite, aristocratic Virginia gentleman who descended from the Revolutionary War hero "Light-Horse Harry." Both men studied at West Point but developed very different tactics-Lee proved to be a careful strategist who made brilliant use of standard military tactics, while Grant was instinctive, spontaneous, and unconventional. Pitted against one another, the two became the most influential players in the bloodiest and most wrenching episode of American history. In alternating chapters, historian Jules Archer begins by exploring their formative years and early careers all the way through their postwar lives. Archer focuses on the men’s roles during the Civil War, detailing down to specific battles and decisions made by each man. Perfect for reluctant young historians as well as history-buffs-to-be.

Rogerson’s timely book begins with the contemporary Middle East and the proxy wars between Saudi Arabia and its Sunni allies and Shiite Iran. To understand these, he suggests, we must understand the origins of the Sunni-Shia divide, which go back to the death of the Prophet Muhammad in 632, the accidental coup that set aside the claims of Ali, and the slaughter of Ali’s son Husayn at Kerbala. These events, known to every Muslim, have created a slender fault line in the Middle East.

Jakes, Senior Pastor, The Potter’s House) and argues that we must learn to see people not by the color of their skin, but as God sees them-humans created in the image of God.
