This finely etched, on-site work examines the relationships between the changing political system and political culture in Israel, with particular focus on the decade of the 1980s. Written by a scholar equally at home in the United States and in Israel, and intellectually equally at home in political science and anthropology, Israeli Visions and Divisions is a fundamental contribution to a literature long on passion and short on reason, which perhaps is an academic reflection of social life in this deeply troubled land.Aronoff starts from the belief that the basic conflicting and even contradictory interpretations over what should be the exact character of Israel as a Jewish state continues to be the source of the most serious division among Jews within contemporary Israel. As a consequence, consensus politics yields to coalition politics; and prospects for a future consensus are dim. Conflict among Jewish political and religious groups, and between Jews and Arabs, is aggravated by the uses of Zionist symbolism in a fragmented political culture. This is a serious critique made from a sympathetic quarter. Aronoff suggests that the Israeli political system is undergoing a crisis of political legitimacy, exemplified by the rise of extraparliamentary movements. The parliamentary system accentuates’ these divisions by making every minor tradition and vision part of the legislative and executive processes.Israeli Visions and Divisions is not a pessimistic reading. The author is convinced that the way is open for a move away from particularism and tribalism, and toward a new universalism and humanism. The old policies have proven bankrupt, and th,e old ideologies have lost their salience. The book is rich in detail and profound in outlook. It will be greeted by those interested in new policies as well as by students of the Middle East who hope to piece together what has gone awry in the land of milk and honey.

Multiplying Divisions The Fractious Nature of Israel, God’s Elect People

English | ISBN: 1666706132 | 2024 | 222 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
The Old Testament features only one God, YHWH, electing only one people, Israel, not only for its own benefit but also to be eventually a light to the nations. Unfortunately, this singular people struggled in every era with a propensity to divide, thus pitting one segment of the community against another. Israel had to deal with potential division as it was settling in Canaan, in the period of the judges, and throughout the monarchy. Famously, after the Great Schism following Solomon’s reign, Israel (=the Northern Kingdom) and Judah (=the Southern Kingdom) experienced separate exiles. The major narratives treating Israel’s tendency to divide are the subject of this book. The book also features a survey of prophetic perspectives on Israel’s (dis)unity, including hope for its eventually being unified. In a final chapter, the (dis)unity of the fledgling church as well as the implications of viewing canonical Israel as a figure for the church will be considered. In that vein, it appears that the church has emulated its biblical figure, Israel, all too well as it not only displayed division throughout its history but continues to multiply divisions to this day.

The British and American Intelligence Divisions in Occupied Germany, 1945-1955 A Secret System of Rule

Free Download The British and American Intelligence Divisions in Occupied Germany, 1945-1955: A Secret System of Rule by Luke Daly-Groves
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2024 | 390 Pages | ISBN : 3031501993 | 24.6 MB
This book provides the first history of the British and American Intelligence Divisions (IDs) in occupied Germany and the liaison between them. It reveals that after the fall of Adolf Hitler’s Third Reich, much of Germany was controlled by an Anglo-American secret system of rule which was the real backbone of the occupation and largely explains its successful outcomes. Based in Heidelberg, the American ID was the senior American military intelligence organisation in occupied Germany, responsible for the security of American forces in Europe. The British ID, based in Herford, was a purpose-built intelligence organisation designed to ensure the security of the British Zone of Germany and to help achieve the Allied occupation objectives. The IDs undertook military, scientific, security, political, and state-building intelligence tasks which each form the focus of a chapter in this book.

English | 2004 | pages: 51 | ISBN: 1841765929 | PDF | 12,8 mb
In the last years of World War II, 1944-45, the Waffen-SS formed many nominal ‘divisions’ from a motley range of sources, whose battlefield value was as varied as their backgrounds. The best were built around existing Western European volunteer regiments; some, raised from Central Europeans and Russians, were strong in numbers but weak in morale; some were of negligible size, scraped together from remnants and trainees; and some were sinister ‘anti-partisan’ gangs, assembled from the military dregs of the Eastern Front. Illustrated with rare photographs from private collections and meticulous colour artwork, this final title in our sequence details their organisation, uniforms and insignia, and summarises their battle records.

The military branch of the Nazi SS security organisation grew by the end of World War II (1939-1945)from a handful of poorly regarded infantry battalions in 1939, into a force of more than 30 divisions including units of every type. Their battlefield reputation varied widely, from the premier armoured divisions which formed Germany’s utterly reliable spearheads on both main fronts, to low quality ‘anti-partisan’ units. The divisions covered in this second of four titles include the first mountain and cavalry units, and two of the remarkable new Panzer divisions raised in the great 1943 expansion. Illustrated with rare photographs from private collections, the text details their organisation, uniforms and insignia, and summarises their battle record.

On June 22, 1941 when Germany attacked the Soviet Union, her Panzer divisions were to play a major role in this titanic struggle. At its peak, 19 out of the 21 existing Panzer Divisions were deployed against the Soviets. Although overwhelmed by Soviet numbers, the superior skill and capability of the German Panzer divisions meant that in three months the Germans, with the Panzers as their spearhead had advanced deep into Soviet territory, inflicting terrible losses on the Soviets. However, after these initial successes the German offensive began to falter, culminating in the disastrous defeat at Kursk.

At the outbreak of World War II in September 1939, Germany’s armored forces – the Panzerwaffe – were still in their infancy. The restrictions imposed by the Treaty of Versailles meant that German tank development had to be conducted in secret. Initial armor campaigns in Poland were not completely successful and changes were needed before the invasion of France.

German Airborne Divisions Blitzkrieg 1940-41

Free Download Bruce Quarrie, "German Airborne Divisions: Blitzkrieg 1940-41"
English | 2004 | pages: 99 | ISBN: 1841765716 | PDF | 13,6 mb
The German Army of World War II was the first to fully realise the benefits of using airborne troops alongside armoured formations. German Airborne Divisions became an integral part of the blitzkrieg operations that overran much of Western Europe during 1940 and 1941, from the historic raid on the Belgian fortress of Eben-Emael to the pyrrhic victory over British and Commonwealth forces on the island of Crete. This title looks at the creation, evolution, and early operational deployment of the German airborne forces (‘Fallschirmtruppe’), through highly detailed orders of battle, TOEs and examinations of crucial aspects such as doctrine, training, command and control, and the concept of vertical envelopment.
