Daughter of the Dragon Anna May Wong’s Rendezvous with American History [Audiobook]

Free Download Daughter of the Dragon: Anna May Wong’s Rendezvous with American History (Audiobook)
English | ASIN: B0CKRW87HG | 2023 | 13 hours and 16 minutes | M4B@64 kbps | 378 MB
Author: Yunte Huang
Narrator: Rebecca Lam

A trenchant reclamation of the Chinese American movie star, whose battles against cinematic exploitation and endemic racism are set against the currents of twentieth-century history. Born into the steam and starch of a Chinese laundry, Anna May Wong (1905-1961) emerged from turn-of-the-century Los Angeles to become Old Hollywood’s most famous Chinese American actress, a screen siren who captivated global audiences and signed her publicity photos-with a touch of defiance-"Orientally yours." Now, more than a century after her birth, Yunte Huang narrates Wong’s tragic life story, retracing her journey from Chinatown to silent-era Hollywood, and from Weimar Berlin to decadent, prewar Shanghai, and capturing American television in its infancy. As Huang shows, Wong’s rendezvous with history features a remarkable parade of characters, including a smitten Walter Benjamin and (an equally smitten) Marlene Dietrich. Challenging the parodically racist perceptions of Wong as a "Dragon Lady," "Madame Butterfly," or "China Doll," Huang’s biography becomes a truly resonant work of history that reflects the raging anti-Chinese xenophobia, unabashed sexism, and ageism toward women that defined both Hollywood and America in Wong’s all-too-brief fifty-six years on earth.

During the middle of the 19th-Century, Britain and China would twice go to war over trade, and in particular the trade in opium. The Chinese people had progressively become addicted to the narcotic, a habit that British merchants were more than happy to feed from their opium-poppy fields in India. When the Qing dynasty rulers of China attempted to suppress this trade-due to the serious social and economic problems it caused-the British Government responded with gunboat diplomacy, and conflict soon ensued.

Beyond Bruce Lee Chasing the Dragon Through Film, Philosophy, and Popular Culture

Free Download Paul Bowman, "Beyond Bruce Lee: Chasing the Dragon Through Film, Philosophy, and Popular Culture"
English | 2013 | pages: 209 | ISBN: 0231165293, 0231165285 | EPUB | 18,1 mb
In order to understand Bruce Lee, we must look beyond Bruce Lee to the artist’s intricate cultural and historical contexts. This work begins by contextualising Lee, examining his films and martial arts work, and his changing cultural status within different times and places. The text examines Bruce Lee’s films and philosophy in relation to the popular culture and cultural politics of the 1960s and 1970s, and it addresses the resurgence of his popularity in Hong Kong and China in the twenty-first century. The study also explores Lee’s ongoing legacy and influence in the West, considering his function as a shifting symbol of ethnic politics and the ways in which he continues to inform Hollywood film-fight choreography. Beyond Bruce Lee ultimately argues Lee is best understood in terms of "cultural translation" and that his interventions and importance are ongoing.
