The Varieties of Economic Rationality

Free Download Michel Zouboulakis, "The Varieties of Economic Rationality "
English | ISBN: 0415530849 | 2014 | 192 pages | EPUB | 443 KB
The concept of economic rationality is important for the historical evolution of Economics as a scientific discipline. The common idea about this concept -even between economists- is that it has a unique meaning which is universally accepted. This new volume argues that "economic rationality" is not not a universal concept with one single meaning, and that it in fact has different, if not conflicting, interpretations in the evolution of discourse on economics. In order to achieve this, the book traces the historical evolution of the concept of economic rationality from Adam Smith to the present, taking in thinkers from Mill to Friedman, and encompassing approaches from neoclassical to behavioural economics.

The Political Power of Economic Ideas Keynesianism Across Nations

Free Download The Political Power of Economic Ideas: Keynesianism Across Nations edited by Peter A. Hall
English | September 21, 1989 | ISBN: 0691077991, 0691023026 | True EPUB | 416 pages | 2.2 MB
John Maynard Keynes once observed that the "ideas of economists and political philosophers, both when they are right and when they are wrong, are more powerful than is commonly understood." The contributors to this volume take that assertion seriously. In a full-scale study of the impact of Keynesian doctrines across nations, their essays trace the reception accorded Keynesian ideas, initially during the 1930s and then in the years after World War II, in a wide range of nations, including Britain, the United States, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Scandinavia. The contributors review the latest historical evidence to explain why some nations embraced Keynesian policies while others did not. At a time of growing interest in comparative public policy-making, they examine the central issue of how and why particular ideas acquire influence over policy and politics.

Otto Neurath Economic Writings Selections 1904-1945

Free Download Otto Neurath Economic Writings Selections 1904-1945 By Thomas E. Uebel, Robert S. Cohen (auth.)
2005 | 566 Pages | ISBN: 1402022735 | PDF | 3 MB
This book makes available for the first time in English a substantial part of Otto Neurath’s economic writings. The essays and small monographs translated here extend from his student years to his last ever finished piece. They chart not only Neurath’s varied interests in the economic history of antiquity, in war economics and schemes for the socialisation of peacetime economies, in the theory of welfare measures and social indicators and in issues of the theory of collective choice, but also show his philosophical interests emerging in his contributions to seminal debates of the German Social Policy Association. This volume shows that Neurath’s important contributions to the socialist calculation debate are but one aspect of a many-sided and original oeuvre. The translations are preceded by an introductory essay by one of the editors which contextualises the selections by locating them in the various debates of the time that provided their original setting. This book is of interest to economists, philosophers of social science and of economics as well as to historians of philosophy of science and of analytic philosophy.

China’s Multicultural Economies Social and Economic Indicators

Free Download China’s Multicultural Economies: Social and Economic Indicators By Rongxing Guo (auth.)
2013 | 198 Pages | ISBN: 1461458595 | PDF | 1 MB
Although the majority of China’s population is of the Han nationality (which accounts for more than 90% of China’s population), the non-Han ethnic groups have a population of more than 100 million. Until now, China has officially identified, except for other unknown ethnic groups and foreigners with Chinese citizenship, 56 ethnic groups. In addition, ethnic groups vary widely in size. With a population of more than 15 million, the Zhuang have the largest ethnic minority, and the Lhoba, with only two thousand or more, the smallest. China’s ethnic diversity has resulted in a special socioeconomic landscape of China itself. This book develops a complete socioeconomic picture and a detailed and comparable set of data for each of China’s ethnic groups. There have not been any precise data on China’s socioeconomic statistics from multi-ethnic dimension. The only official data released can be found in China Ethnic Statistical Yearbook (released by the State Commission of Ethnic Affairs (SCEA) of the People’s Republic of China since 1994). However, as this Yearbook has only reported the socioeconomic statistics for the minority-based autonomous areas, a complete set of China’s multi-ethnic data cannot be derived from it. This book provides a broad collection of data on China’s 56 ethnic groups and profiles the demography, cultural, economy, and business climates for each of China’s diverse ethnic groups.

Free Download Political, Economic and Financial Country Risk: Analysis of the Gulf Cooperation Council By Mohamed A. Ramady (auth.)
2014 | 281 Pages | ISBN: 3319021761 | PDF | 4 MB
"Decades go by and nothing happens; then weeks go by and decades happen". This apt saying encapsulates the dramatic convulsions taking place across the Arab world that first erupted in 2011 in Tunisia and which rapidly spread to other countries. These events have affected the lives of ordinary citizens in many more ways than had been intended when the ‘Arab Spring’ broke out, with the endgame still not very clear as demonstrated in countries like Egypt, Syria and Libya.By comparison, with some exceptions, the six countries comprising the Gulf Cooperation Council have been relatively unaffected by the general turbulence and uncertainties lapping around them. However, geopolitical shifts involving global superpower rivalries, combined with revolutionary breakthroughs in the non-conventional hydrocarbon energy sector are threatening to challenge the importance of the Arabian Gulf as the world’s leading suppliers of energy, putting their economies under fiscal stress. The author examines such challenges by: * Providing the first in-depth statistical analytical assessment of the GCC countries using monthly data over the period 2001 -2013 for the three risk categories- economic, financial and political risks- and their sub -components so as to enable policymakers enhance components with low risk , while addressing components with perceived higher risk,* Assessing FDI and capital inflows and outflows before and after the "Arab Spring" , and how to encourage FDI inflows, * Inter -Arab and GCC trade and synergies in power transmission , transportation links and establishing new hubs of centers of manufacturing excellence , * Exploring private sector-led growth models to reduce forecasted unemployment. Being complacent is not an option for the GCC. The aim of the book is that having a better understanding of each of the GCC countries’ individual risk parameters will enable the GCC meet future challenges and reduce the chances of a negative ‘Arab Spring’ occurring in the region. Mohamed Ramady is a Visiting Associate Professor at the Department of Finance and Economics, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals. His main research interests are the economics of the Middle East and Saudi Arabia in particular, as well as money and banking He also held senior positions with international financial institutions in the Arabian Gulf and Europe.
