Epistemology After Sextus Empiricus

Free Download Katja Maria Vogt, Justin Vlasits, "Epistemology After Sextus Empiricus"
English | 2020 | pages: 329 | ISBN: 019094630X | PDF | 3,9 mb
Sextus Empiricus was the voice of ancient Greek skepticism for posterity. His writings contain the most subtle and detailed versions of the ancient skeptical arguments known as Pyrrhonism, adding up to a distinctive philosophical approach. Instead of viewing philosophy as valuable because of the answers it gives to important questions, Sextus considered the search for answers itself to be fundamental and offered a philosophy centered on inquiry. Assuming the point of view of an active inquirer, Sextus developed arguments concerning conflicting appearances, infinite regress in argument, dogmatic assertion of premises that are insufficiently justified, and many other ideas that fascinated later philosophers of knowledge across the centuries. He provided a unique perspective on topics of enduring relevance such as perception, language, logical consequence, belief, ignorance, disagreement, and induction.

Reconsidering Historical Epistemology French and Anglophone Styles in History and Philosophy of Science

Free Download Reconsidering Historical Epistemology: French and Anglophone Styles in History and Philosophy of Science by Matteo Vagelli
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2024 | 223 Pages | ISBN : 3031615549 | 7.6 MB
This book explores the key conceptual stakes underpinning historical epistemology. The strong Anglophone interest in historical epistemology, since at least the 1990s, is typically attributed to its simultaneously philosophical and historical synthetic approach to the study of science. Yet this account, considered by critics to be an unreflective assumption, has prevented historical epistemology from developing a clear understanding and definition, especially regarding how precisely historical and philosophical reflections on the sciences should be combined. Thus, this book uniquely analyses how the problems and tensions inherent to the "contemporary" phase of historical epistemology can be clarified by reference to the "classical" French phase. The archaeological method of Michel Foucault, which draws on and transforms fundamental insights by Gaston Bachelard and Georges Canguilhem, is used to exert an enduring influence on the field-especially through the work of Ian Hacking and his philosophical cum historical analyses of "styles of scientific reasoning". Though this book is of great value to academic specialists and graduate students, the fact it addresses questions broad in scope ensures it is also relevant to a range of scholars in many disciplines and will provoke discussion among those interested in foundational issues in history and philosophy of science.

Intellectual Agency and Virtue Epistemology A Montessori Perspective

Free Download Patrick Frierson, "Intellectual Agency and Virtue Epistemology: A Montessori Perspective"
English | ISBN: 1350267449 | 2021 | 272 pages | PDF | 3 MB
Drawing on the work of Maria Montessori and contemporary virtue epistemologists such as Linda Zagzebski and Jason Baehr, Intellectual Agency and Virtue Epistemology presents a new interpretation of the nature of intellectual agency and its associated virtues. Focusing on Montessori’s interpretation of specific virtues including sensory attentiveness, intellectual love and intellectual humility, it discusses why these are virtues, why one can be held responsible for them, and how they relate to each other. Moreover, it considers pedagogical implications of considering these capacities to be virtues. Intellectual Agency and Virtue Epistemology not only reveals the value of seeing Montessori as a virtue epistemologist, it encourages educationalists to take seriously the cultivation of intellectual virtues as an important part of the education of children.

English | 2011 | pages: 204 | ISBN: 0415895545, 1138008818 | EPUB | 2,5 mb
In this book, Phillips gives an overview of the contribution of Nyaya-the classical Indian school that defends an externalist position about knowledge as well as an internalist position about justification. Nyaya literature extends almost two thousand years and comprises hundreds of texts, and in this book, Phillips presents a useful overview of the under-studied system of thought. For the philosopher rather than the scholar of Sanskrit, the book makes a whole range of Nyaya positions and arguments accessible to students of epistemology who are unfamiliar with classical Indian systems.
