English | 2016 | ISBN: 1138671134 | EPUB | pages: 368 | 2.4 mb
First published in 1982, this book is inspired the ideas generated by Eric Hobsbawm, and has taken shape around a unifying preoccupation with the symbolic order and its relationship to political and religious belief. It explores some of the oldest question in Marxist historiography, for example the relationship of ‘base’ and ‘superstructure’, art and social life, and also some of the newest and most problematic questions, such as the relationship of dreams and fantasy to political action, or of past and present ― historical consciousness ― to the making of ideology. The essays, which range widely over period and place, are intended to break new ground and take on difficult questions.

Tropes, Universals and the Philosophy of Mind Essays at the Boundary of Ontology and Philosophical Psychology

Free Download Tropes, Universals and the Philosophy of Mind: Essays at the Boundary of Ontology and Philosophical Psychology By Simone Gozzano, Francesco Orilia
2008 | 194 Pages | ISBN: 393879383X | PDF | 125 MB
The ontological debate on the nature of properties is alive as ever. Mainly, they are viewed either as universals or tropes (abstract particulars), an alternative with an immediate impact on what events are taken to be. Although much inquiry in philosophy of mind is done without a full awareness of it, some recent works suggest that the choice may have far-reaching consequences on central topics of this discipline, e.g., token physicalism, multiple realizability, mental causation, perception, introspection, self-awareness. This book explores the extent to which this is true with novel contributions by philosophers who have played a major role in bringing to the fore this interplay of foundational metaphysics and philosophical psychology and by other experts in these fields.

The aesthetic exception Essays on art, theatre, and politics

Free Download Tony Fisher, "The aesthetic exception: Essays on art, theatre, and politics"
English | ISBN: 1526170167 | 2023 | 288 pages | EPUB | 1417 KB
The aesthetic exception theorises anew the relation between art and politics. It challenges critical trends that discount the role of aesthetic autonomy, to impulsively reassert art as an effective form of social engagement. But it equally challenges those on the flipside of the efficacy debate, who insist that art’s politics is limited to a recondite space of ‘autonomous resistance’. The book shows how each side of the efficacy debate overlooks art’s exceptional status and its social mediations. Mobilising philosophy and cultural theory, and employing examples from visual art, performance, and theatre, it proposes four alternative tests to ‘effect’ to offer a nuanced account of art’s political character. Those tests examine how art relates to politics as a practice that articulates its historical conjuncture, and how it prefigures the ‘new’ through simulations capable of activating the political life of the spectator.

The Persistence of the Palestinian Question Essays on Zionism and the Palestinians

Free Download The Persistence of the Palestinian Question: Essays on Zionism and the Palestinians By Joseph Massad
2006 | 232 Pages | ISBN: 0415770092 | PDF | 4 MB
In this erudite and groundbreaking series of essays, renowned author Joseph Massad asks and answers key questions, such as: What has been the main achievement of the Zionist movement? What accounts for the failure of the Palestinian National Movement to win its struggle against Israel? What do anti-Semitism, colonialism and racism have to do with the Palestinian/Israeli ‘conflict’? Joseph Massad offers a radical departure from mainstream analysis in order to expose the causes for the persistence of the ‘Palestinian Question’. He proposes that it is not in de-linking the Palestinian Question from the Jewish Question that a resolution can be found, but by linking them as one and the same question. All other proposed solutions, the author argues, are bound to fail. Deeply researched and documented, this book analyzes the failure of the ‘peace process’ and proposes that a solution to the Palestinian Question will not be found unless settler-colonialism, racism, and anti-Semitism are abandoned as the ideological framework for a resolution. Individual essays further explore the struggle over Jewish identity in Israel and the struggle among Palestinians over what constitutes the Palestinian Question today.

The Idea of New India Essays in Defence of Critical Thought

Free Download Pramod Kumar, "The Idea of New India: Essays in Defence of Critical Thought"
English | ISBN: 1032150696 | 2021 | 388 pages | PDF | 4 MB
The idea of ‘New India’ has acquired a new currency. The dominant grammar of politics dilutes the critical impulse and deters the expression of alternate politics. The interpretive possibilities have been replaced by a reactive exchange. Technology is presented as a panacea, rather than just a facilitator. Legitimacy and normative dignity for these ideas is acquired by redefining the role of the institutions and also through constitutional amendments. A major intellectual effort is required to reformulate public policy, governance systems and social relations to balance the opposite claims of market efficiency and economic growth with social equity and justice.

The Ethics of Remembering and the Consequences of Forgetting Essays on Trauma, History, and Memory

Free Download Michael O’Loughlin, "The Ethics of Remembering and the Consequences of Forgetting: Essays on Trauma, History, and Memory "
English | ISBN: 1442231874 | 2014 | 406 pages | EPUB | 3 MB
The Ethics of Remembering and the Consequences of Forgetting: Essays on Trauma, History, and Memory brings together scholars from a variety of disciplines that draw on multiple perspectives to address issues that arise at the intersection of trauma, history, and memory. Contributors include critical theorists, critical historians, psychoanalysts, psychotherapists, and a working artist. The authors use intergenerational trauma theory while also pushing and pulling at the edges of conventional understandings of how trauma is defined. This book respects the importance of the recuperation of memory and the creation of interstitial spaces where trauma might be voiced. The writers are consistent in showing a deep respect for the sociohistorical context of subjective formation and the political importance of recuperating dangerous memory-the kind of memory that some authorities go to great lengths to erase. The Ethics of Remembering and the Consequences of Forgetting is of interest to critical historians, critical social theorists, psychotherapists, psychosocial theorists, and to those exploring the possibilities of life as the practice of freedom.

The Culture Industry Selected Essays on Mass Culture

Free Download The Culture Industry: Selected Essays on Mass Culture By Theodor W Adorno, J. M. Bernstein
2001 | 192 Pages | ISBN: 0415255341 | PDF | 4 MB
The creation of the Frankfurt School of critical theory in the 1920s saw the birth of some of the most exciting and challenging writings of the twentieth century. It is out of this background that the great critic Theodor Adorno emerged. His finest essays are collected here, offering the reader unparalleled insights into Adorno’s thoughts on culture. He argued that the culture industry commodified and standardized all art. In turn this suffocated individuality and destroyed critical thinking. At the time, Adorno was accused of everything from overreaction to deranged hysteria by his many detractors. In today’s world, where even the least cynical of consumers is aware of the influence of the media, Adorno’s work takes on a more immediate significance. The Culture Industry is an unrivalled indictment of the banality of mass culture.
