Fragility and Transcendence Essays on the Thought of Jean-Louis Chrétien

Free Download Fragility and Transcendence: Essays on the Thought of Jean-Louis Chrétien (Reframing Continental Philosophy of Religion) edited by Jeffrey Bloechl
English | October 3, 2023 | ISBN: 1538153211 | True EPUB/PDF | 192 pages | 0.5/1.7 MB
The thought of Jean-Louis Chrétien is most familiar to those who have taken up the theological turn in French phenomenology, yet it defies reduction to either phenomenology or theology, or for that matter spirituality, literature, or Greek thought. Written in beautiful French prose and argued with unsurpassed erudition, Chrétien’s works defy easy interpretation. One nonetheless finds a center of gravity in attempts to define and then elaborate an original account of human being in terms of call and response, from which there follow penetrating studies of language and body, as well as illuminating approaches to a range of themes including temporality, prayer, and religious reading.

Character, Liberty, and Law Kantian Essays in Theory and Practice

Free Download Character, Liberty, and Law: Kantian Essays in Theory and Practice By Jeffrie G. Murphy (auth.)
1998 | 242 Pages | ISBN: 9048151104 | PDF | 6 MB
Jeffrie G. Murphy’s third collection of essays further pursues the topics of punishment and retribution that were explored in his two previous collections: Retribution, Justice and Therapy and RetributionReconsidered. Murphy now explores these topics in the light of reflections on issues that are normally associated with religion: forgiveness, mercy, and repentance. He also explores the general issue of theory and practice and discusses a variety of topics in applied ethics – e.g., freedom of artistic expression, the morality of gambling, and the value of forgiveness in psychological counseling. As always, his perspective may be described as Kantian; and, indeed, this collection contains the first extended piece of Kant scholarship that he has done in years: a long essay on Kant on theory and practice.

The Path to Genocide Essays on Launching the Final Solution

Free Download The Path to Genocide: Essays on Launching the Final Solution By Christopher R. Browning
1995 | 208 Pages | ISBN: 0521558786 | PDF | 25 MB
The Nazi Holocaust haunts the modern imagination as one of the most compelling examples of the human capacity for organized atrocity on a mass scale. This authoritative account of the evolution of Nazi Jewish policy from 1939 to 1942 seeks to answer some of the fundamental questions about what actually happened and why, between the outbreak of war and the emergence of the Final Solution. Christopher Browning’s account assesses the historians’ interpretations and offers his own insights, based on detailed case studies that uncovered important and telling new evidence.

Reflective Equilibrium Essays in Honour of Robert Heeger

Free Download Reflective Equilibrium: Essays in Honour of Robert Heeger By Wibren van der Burg, Theo van Willigenburg (auth.), Wibren van der Burg, Theo van Willigenburg (eds.)
1998 | 291 Pages | ISBN: 9401060878 | PDF | 6 MB
Robert Heeger has been professor of ethics at Utrecht University since 1977, both at the Faculty of Theology and at the Faculty of Philosophy. Since 1985, he has also been teaching at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. Before he came to Utrecht, he had worked at Uppsala University for many years. He has always stayed in close contact with his Swedish colleagues, and twice he was a visiting professor at Uppsala University. With his eastern-German background, his roots partly in Russia, his thesis on the Italian philosopher Gramsci and his interest in Anglo-American analytical philosophy he has a broad international orientation. It is no wonder, therefore, that he always felt much at home in the Societas Ethica, the European Society for Research in Ethics, which he served as its president from 1991 to 1995. Robert Heeger is primarily a teacher and excels as a discussion partner. With his sharp analytical mind and his great intellectual curiosity he not only exposes critically the weak. points in an argument, but often also brings up creative suggestions to improve it. Thus he has greatly influenced his many students (he co-supervised fourteen doctoral theses) and his colleagues, both in the Netherlands and abroad. Moreover, he was one of the first moral philosophers in the Netherlands, and even in Europe, to be involved in environmental ethics and in animal and veterinary ethics.

The broad scope of the book includes divine transcendence and its methodological bearing on the doctrine of divine love, the nature and scope of divine love, the interrelation between God’s love and wrath, the plausibility of an impassable God of love, and the application of various conceptions of divine love to the problem of divine hiddenness, human ethics, and human free will, among other topics.
