THEORY AND REALITY IN FINANCIAL ECONOMICS ESSAYS TOWARD A NEW POLITICAL FINANCE

Free Download George M Frankfurter, "THEORY AND REALITY IN FINANCIAL ECONOMICS: ESSAYS TOWARD A NEW POLITICAL FINANCE"
English | ISBN: 9812707913 | 2007 | 240 pages | PDF | 2 MB
The current literature on financial economics is dominated by neoclassical dogma and, supposedly, the notion of value-neutrality. However, the failure of neoclassical economics to deal with real financial phenomena suggests that this might be too simplistic of an approach. This book consists of a collection of essays dealing with financial markets’ imperfections, and the inability of neoclassical economics to deal with such imperfections. Its central argument is that financial economics, as based on the tenets of neoclassical economics, cannot answer or solve the real-life problems that people face. It also shows the direct relationship between economics and politics – something that is usually denied in academic models, given that science is supposed to be value-neutral. In this thought-provoking and avant-garde book, the author not only exposes what has gone wrong, but also suggests reforms to both the academic and the political-economic systems that might help make markets fair rather than efficient. Drawing on interdisciplinary fields, this book will appeal to readers who are interested in finance, economics, business, the political economy and philosophy.

Pragmatism and Objectivity Essays Sparked by the Work of Nicholas Rescher

Free Download Sami Pihlström, "Pragmatism and Objectivity: Essays Sparked by the Work of Nicholas Rescher"
English | 2017 | pages: 293 | ISBN: 0367595370, 1138655236 | PDF | 0,9 mb
Pragmatism and Objectivity illuminates the nature of contemporary pragmatism against the background of Rescher’s work, resulting in a stronger grasp of the prospects and promises of this philosophical movement. The central insight of pragmatism is that we must start from where we find ourselves and deflate metaphysical theories of truth in favor of an account that reflects our actual practices of the concept. Pragmatism links truth and rationality to experience, success, and action. While crude versions of pragmatism state that truth is whatever works for a person or a community, Nicholas Rescher has been at the forefront of arguing for a more sophisticated pragmatist position. According to his position, we can illuminate a robust concept of truth by considering its links with inquiry, assertion, belief, and action. His brand of pragmatism is objective and organized around truth and inquiry, rather than other forms of pragmatism that are more subjective and lenient. The contingency and fallibility of knowledge and belief formation does not mean that our beliefs are simply what our community decides, or that truth and objectivity are spurious notions. Rescher offers the best chance of understanding how it is that beliefs can be the products of human inquiry yet aim at the truth nonetheless. The essays in this volume, written by established and up-and-coming scholars of pragmatism, touch on themes related to epistemology, philosophy of mind, philosophy of science, and ethics.

Physics, Philosophy, and the Scientific Community Essays in the philosophy and history of the natural sciences and mathematics

Free Download Physics, Philosophy, and the Scientific Community: Essays in the philosophy and history of the natural sciences and mathematics In honor of Robert S. Cohen By Joan Lisa Bromberg (auth.), Kostas Gavroglu, John Stachel, Marx W. Wartofsky (eds.)
1995 | 388 Pages | ISBN: 9048144361 | PDF | 9 MB
In three volumes, a distinguished group of scholars from a variety of disciplines in the natural and social sciences, the humanities and the arts contribute essays in honor of Robert S. Cohen, on the occasion of his 70th birthday. The range of the essays, as well as their originality, and their critical and historical depth, pay tribute to the extraordinary scope of Professor Cohen’s intellectual interests, as a scientist-philosopher and a humanist, and also to his engagement in the world of social and political practice. The essays presented in Physics, Philosophy, and the ScientificCommunity (Volume I of Essays in Honor of Robert S. Cohen) focus on philosophical and historical issues in contemporary physics: on the origins and conceptual foundations of quantum mechanics, on the reception and understanding of Bohr’s and Einstein’s work, on the emergence of quantum electrodynamics, and on some of the sharp philosophical and scientific issues that arise in current scientific practice (e.g. in superconductivity research). In addition, several essays deal with critical issues within the philosophy of science, both historical and contemporary: e.g. with Cartesian notions of mechanism in the philosophy of biology; with the language and logic of science – e.g. with new insights concerning the issue of a `physicalistic’ language in the arguments of Neurath, Carnap and Wittgenstein; with the notion of `elementary logic’; and with rational and non-rational elements in the history of science. Two original contributions to the history of mathematics and some studies in the comparative sociology of science round off this outstanding collection.
