Studying Ethnic Minority and Economically Disadvantaged Populations Methodological Challenges and Best Practices

Free Download George P Knight, "Studying Ethnic Minority and Economically Disadvantaged Populations: Methodological Challenges and Best Practices"
English | ISBN: 1433804743 | 2009 | 224 pages | PDF | 3 MB
Ethnic minority and economically disadvantaged populations have been historically underrepresented in social science research, and despite improvements in recent years, this trend continues today. Given the rapidly changing demographics of the United States, there is an acute need for more targeted research on these populations, which requires an understanding of diversity and a more nuanced understanding of human behavior and outcomes. Unfortunately, there is a relative dearth of information in standard research texts regarding the unique methodological challenges associated with conducting research with these populations. George P. Knight, Mark W. Roosa, and Adriana J. Uma a-Taylor have filled that gap with a book that identifies strategies for overcoming the obstacles social scientists routinely face in these situations. In this volume, the authors: Discuss strategies for resolving typical problems in sampling, recruitment and retention; Address ethical issues associated with researching these populations; Examine issues associated with measurement and the importance of measurement equivalence; Describe potential linguistic problems with translated measures and provide solutions to maintain the credibility of scientific inferences based on those measures, and; Present strategies for adapting previously published preventive interventions for use with ethnic minority and low-income populations. Throughout, the authors combine firsthand experience with a thorough and incisive understanding of the literature. The result is a vital, comprehensive resource that will be a great help for students and experienced researchers alike.

Free Download Nolan Zane, "Evidence-Based Psychological Practice With Ethnic Minorities: Culturally Informed Research and Clinical Strategies "
English | ISBN: 1433820897 | 2016 | 320 pages | PDF | 3 MB
An essential component of evidence-based psychological practice (EBPP) is attending to the ethnocultural heritage of the client. However, relatively little research has been conducted on culturally- informed EBPP with ethnic minorities, especially research that satisfies rigorous methodological criteria. In this book, experts examine the reasons for this and suggest tangible strategies for conducting more impactful studies to promote culturally competent treatment. The chapters address critical research issues such as measurement and design/methodology, and inspiring examples show how EBPP can be tailored to meet the specific needs of ethnic minorities. This volume is an important step in reducing disparities and promoting effective mental health treatment for underserved populations.

The Political Anthropology of Ethnic and Religious Minorities

English | 2018 | ISBN: 036789291X, 081538212X | EPUB | pages: 138 | 0.9 mb
This book presents some arguments for why a political anthropological perspective can be particularly helpful for understanding the connected political and cultural challenges and opportunities posed by the situation of ethnic and religious minorities. The first chapter shortly introduces the major anthropological concepts used, including liminality, trickster, imitation and schismogenesis; concepts that are used together with approaches of historical sociology and genealogy, especially concerning the rise and fall of empires, and their lasting impact. The conceptual framework suggested here is particularly helpful for understanding how marginal places can become liminal, appearing suddenly at the center of political attention. The introduction also shows the manner in which minority existence can problematize the depersonalizing tendencies of modern globalization. Subsequent chapters demonstrate how the described political anthropological conceptual framework can be used in certain European regions, and in the case of certain ethnic and religious minority, and each illustrates that instead of charismatic leaders, trickster politicians are emerging and increasingly dominate, through the "public sphere", the space of modern politics emptied of real presence.
